can someone explain to me why CT is praised as much as it is? I enjoy the game, it's probably one of my top SNES games but I never really understood why it was so highly rated in general.
The characters are pretty one dimensional for the most part, the story is not anything too special aside from the twists here and there, the combat is good but too simple, the only things that are obviously really good about it are the soundtrack and the pixel art.

Chrono Trigger remains one of the only JRPGs I've ever played that understood the importance of pacing, proper length, and designing areas around the reasonable assumption of player level. Consequently, it's one of the few good JRPGs ever made.

I wish I could like JRPGs. I really do.
I used to adore anime, I loved long story games, I read fuckhuge novels. I play the fuck out of strategy and base-building games, I definitely enjoy complexity.
I just cannot stand JRPGs. I get like 20 hours in any of them tops, and I can't beat them afterwards. I put 30 into Persona 3 FES, lost interest. Got to the final dungeon of FFIV on DS (shocking I got that far,) but then just lost interest completely. Got close to the end of The World Ends With You, loved all of it, then boom lost interest never picked it up again.
I even collected every SMT mainline and spinoff for PS2 and ended up selling all of them besides Nocturne because I couldn't stand playing them, even though I wanted to love them.
I never even took Persona 4 out of the case.
I only kept Nocturne because it's supposed to be a holy grail RPG, but I can't get into it. I just can't. I hate that about myself.

Because there's nothing wrong with it. The characters are simple but we'll characterised and likable, the story ramps up the quality sufficiently to never become tedious, the gameplay has just enough depth for the flash and fast speed to keep it interesting, the art is stellar, as is the music, the settings are all immensely varied, and the pacing is great.
It doesn't excel to the sheer extremes of the flawed classics that are generally considered for the best RPGs ever made, but none of them are so uniformally competent in every category. In my mind, it's the most competent game ever made.

I hate it to say it but are you people fucking serious? It was the most simple, braindead jrpg I have played. The difficulty level is basically 10 year old. The Final Fantasy games, as a point of reference, are often really easy games and I was surprised that Chrono Trigger was even easier.
Its just a very shallow game with a combo attack gimmick and some good music. I can appreciate no random battles but that's about the only point where the game excels mechanically. Everything else is so damn vanilla, including the throwaway storyline. Talk about a game with an overblown reputation. Jesus.

I played FFVII before CT
I enjoyed CT significantly more. Not that FFVII is bad or anything, it just didn't really enchant me, or keep my interest the way CT did.
I wasn't a fan of the combat in FFVII, it felt pretty barebones and uninvolved. The translation, as we all know, is pretty shit. But beyond that, the pacing and writing leave something to be desired and navigating the world at times felt more like an exercise in tedium than exploration.
