Should I buy the anniversary edition of this? Is it good? I've been looking to scratch and old(er)-school jrpg itch recently, and i've never really heard anything about this game.

It starts out great but the story goes downhill towards the end. Full of clichés from the glory days of Dreamcast. English voice acting is weird. Unskippable battle videos. Too many save points (= too easy).
Eternal Arcadia is miles better but since there weren't many RPGs on Dreamcast, back then everyone played both games.
I bought it and own it for the dreamcast.
They actually cared enough to patch it. I mostly bought it to hear it in japanese, and the hard mode is pretty good.
I waited till it was 10 a few weeks ago, so I would while it lasts.

the videos are prerendered and looked good back then, but aged horribly
battle system is amazing even for today's standards, but the videos drag that shit out unnecessarily and you will grow to hate it
Grandia 3 had a much better battle system, but the story sucked.
Oh by the way, Grandia 2 has a fantastic soundtrack.
It's not bad, but I preferred the first Grandia overall.

It's alright but the plot becomes rather mediocre in the end, however it does scratch that old JRPG itch sure.
I suggest you go for Trails in the Sky instead. Slower start, a lot of reading but it turns into one hell of a ride in the end

It's a solid JRPG. Its turn system is one of, if not, THE best an RPG has ever had, the magic system is simple yet works very well, and the bonus stat system is pretty cool.
If you do play it, play it in English The cast for the dub is top notch and is mostly taken straight from the first two MGS games. Heck, the MC is Liquid Snake, his hawk companion is Colonel Campbell, and his Brother is Solidus. The priestess is that traitor in MGS1. You also get a bonus Ariel from The Little Mermaid as a sadistic demon.

Trails has positional based combat with something like FFX's turn system, if you've played that. To look at it another way, it's Grandia's battle system, with its interruption of casting and delaying enemy turns, but without the real time aspect of it. It's not as cool, but it gets pretty damn close. The Trails in the Sky games also have a cooler spell/bonus stat system, though, so I'd argue that it's definitely worth checking out if you like Grandia.

Grandia 3 wasn't what I would call good but it wasn't unplayable. I'm 90% positive that the characters all talked like they were pants-on-head retarded because they rewrote the English dialogue to match the lip movements of the 3D animations speaking in Japanese.

Yeah, arguably the single best battle system in JRPGs. It's not as legendary as Grandia 1 overall but it's really entertaining and solidly in the top tier of all time JRPGs.
The steam version is actually the best by a mile now, both the original DC and PS2 versions have some slight emulation issues and the original PC version from back in the day can be a nightmare to get running.There is nothing wrong with emulating it still if you don't want to pay for it, it is however worth every penny.

It's subjective, of course, but it borrows a lot of the cast from Metal Gear Solid, so you might like this game's dub if you liked that of MGS.
