Better combat system that required you to learn the actual character to Got Gus at kill confirms.
It was just bad at translating this which made it inaccessible to new players.
Its not really comparable to smash if you talk about fighting mechanics, it's more like tekken tech wide with the b.a.c.k.s. system and Dissidia with how you build damage then deal the death blow.

Well, by being playable on sony consoles as opposed to nintendo or microsoft consoles, the last two remaining competitors. Sony kinda carries the torch of "japanese games that arent nintendo". It has a lot more third party exclusives and anything japanese thats not nintendo is probably gonna be played on a sony console. also nintendo has always been a bit... picky about their brand and what its asscosiated with, so for them to take in all these third party very iconic characters into smash when even sony didnt with their game is pretty strange

The biggest problem I think is that the stage hazards are too obscure. Like, you have to have played Game and Wario to understand why a random background event that isn't even touching you is knocking you off the map, I had to look it up myself. And they're too obnoxious some times, like that Mega Man stage.
In the original Smash, it's obvious you can't walk into a tornado and you need to move to higher ground when lava is rising. I was only playing For Glory for a while because I hated stage hazards, but seeing how well someone used Hyrule Castle 64's tornado as part of a strategy in a recent /v/ tourney, I wish they were still around but just more obvious and less obnoxious.

Well Dr.Mario is more acceptable than Roy if it comes to clone arguments seeing as Dr.Mario retains all of Mario's fighting styles pre-brawl.
Costumes. Every character had at least one unlockable costume with its own set of colors, plus there were DLC costumes for everybody. Smash still has cool ones here and there like the Koopa kids but the majority if the cast don't get extra costumes which is made even more annoying when they continue to pump out Mii outfits.
