I look up if there's romance and good waifus. If there are, I play a man.
I started doing females just to be different from my brother, but I do tend to like the models/animations more now
I always play male. If a game defaulted to the woman I'd probably do that though. Then I use the default appearance. If there's a canon name I use that. If not, I use the default name. If there isn't a default name either than I'll make up something fitting for the setting after an extensive search of the game's wiki to make sure no other characters have that name.

Male/female honestly depends on what mood I'm in. Ended up with a kind-eyed black guy in Mass Effect and a qt French girl in Dragon's Dogma.

Not really, man. I'm playing my role as Anon in world so-and-so. I still get in the role of Glorious Chosen One or whatever but still as myself, not as a little girl or some shit. Like some kind of alternate universe me.

The only time I regretted choosing female was when I played swtor, because I was forced to romance a guy who was an avatar for ant hivemind. When I triggered something there was no turning back due to shitty bioware writing and retarded dialog wheel, even though I told him to fuck off on multiple occasions.
All depends on which option has the best variety of playing dress up.
Playing as Serana in Pogeymans X and Y was some of the most fun ive had simply due to the anticipation of unlocking new clothes and customizing to look my cutest. But that isn't always the case, sometimes the male option is better for playing dress up.

I might play a boy if the game has romance/dating a cute girls to pick from. Most of the time I like to play a girl because they have more customization and because I'm not a girl in real life. Adding to that beast/monster races would be super cool but I can understand that making new armor models would be super expensive/tedious when you could just make human armor and re-use that shit till the end of time.
The most recent game I played a dude was Oreshika and that's only because you can make characters based off of your actual face and I'm pretty handsome, most photogenic clan in ancient japan.

I'll play as the loli or the big mclarge huge, smaller characters for dex/int (maybe tall and lanky for int) characters. Bigger characters for more strength based characters

I remember always wanting to play as a female character but feeling intense shame. I'd start a new game and than stop 5 minutes later because I was too embarrassed. Probably at 17 years of age I just decided fuck it, who cares and I haven't played a male since. Mass effect was one game which I found particularly enjoyable as well as FFXIV.
