Platinum is what Diamond and Pearl should have been from the start. Instead of adding new features like they do with each third entry they mostly had to fix everything that was wrong with the base games. Because Hoenn is the most diverse, adventurous and comfy region, the "save the world" plot was novel at the time and still the best executed in the series, the music was S tier, the new Pokemon actually broke away and tried new things, and it represented the single biggest mechanical overhaul in the series, improving the formula a hundredfold, not only adding its own improvements but fleshing out GSC's halfassed additions (hold items, battle tower) into full fledged features.

Definitely enjoyed Emerald. My favourite's Crystal, though. Emerald was definitely Sugimori's character at its best. The characters were too blocky before and too round afterwards. Emerald characters strike perfect balance. Especially player-characters have memorable enough design yet it's somehow bland enough for the sake of game and player.

I've found that the metagames of each generation fix what was really broken the previous generation, but introduce some new bullshit.
It's most obvious in Gen 6, where they nerfed weather, removed gems and added Defog to counter entry hazard spam, and fairy to nerf dragon and give offensive poison/steel more use, but dropped the ball with a few overpowered Pokémon completely centralising everything.
