In the last few missions, soldier chatter and the commander implythat the Ranger is Storm 1. The way they do it gave me a bit of a feel to be honest.

If you're not dash cancelling, you're doing Fencer wrong.
Pick the melee weapon of your choice and pair it either with a light shield or a needler cannon. Use the shield/needler to cancel the end of the dash animation so you can fly across the map.
