So, the golden age of JRPGs was probably the 16-bit era. Chrono Trigger, three GOAT Final Fantasy games, Lunar, Phantasy Star IV, Dragon Quest V etc etc. 32-bit era is also a contender for the golden age of JRPGs what with the polarizing FF VII, FF Tactics, Xenogears, Suikoden games, etc.
That isn't what I want to discuss today, though, /v/. I want to ask what the best JRPGs from the following generations are. This last console generation and the one before it.
Honestly, these consoles are capable of delivering the best JRPGs of all time, the hardware is there, but the execution left something to be desired. Take for example Final Fantasy XII. Game looks great. Shitty combat system and a weak story make it an overall forgettable FF game. JRPGs are a fucking joke now when people cite a game like Ni No Kuni as one of the best. Charming, looks great, but the gameplay isn't that great. I mean it's not a bad game, it's just good, not great.
Really the only great JRPG of recent memory I can think of is Xenoblade. There's also Dragon Quest VIII, but other than that I feel every other JRPG is at best a good game, but not a great game.
So /v/ give me your great, fucking amazing JRPGs of recent memory and a spiel about what you liked about it. Don't give me no weak, "I enjoyed this, this was a good JRPG" shit like a fucking Tales game or some shit. Great games, handheld or console, whatevs, go!

Metal Max 2 Reloaded (if you want modern) and 3, particularly if you liked Chrono Trigger
Zero and Ao no kiseki duology are pretty great
I also think Shadow Hearts is great too
I could also say Romancing Saga Minstrel Song, but I really don't prefer it over Romancing SaGa 2, but maybe you would like it a lot.

The Last Story was a pretty good sort of Stealth/JRPGs hybrid. Motherfucking Sakaguchi was behind it, so if you're a Final Fantasy fanboy, which all signs point to yes, you would probably like it.
I'd say Nier, but that game is very love-it-or-hate-it on top of being very different from a traditional JRPG

Metal Max 2 is on par with Chrono Trigger as one of the best games of the SNES, in my opinion it's even better than Trigger

I heard they did an MM2 translation years ago though, not quite sure.
You might also want to check out the translation patches of Shining Force 3 Scenarios, they're all great games as well.
