I think that while the first game is better in terms of amount of content, it's bogged down too much by some execution flaws such as the camera being too close and not letting you see enough (even leads to the occasional leap of faith), the lives system being annoying, especially with pits insta-killing you, and the dances breaking the flow too much. Either have them be quick like in Risky's Revenge or replaced by items like in Pirate's Curse.

Shantae 1 felt a bit stretched as far as content went, Shantae 2 felt better and got you into the action faster, Shantae 3 looks and plays even smoother and the art is arousing as fuck.

I found the planes mechanic clunky jumping towards or away from the screen on special pads was a hassle
I found changing magic forms by waiting for the right dance slow

I haven't finished playing through Shantae yet so I can't really give any opinion beyond the screen size making it hard to time evasion which I find bothersome and the controls around jumping, moving and the transition between them not working the way I'd like them to.

The Risky's Revenge is summarised pretty much in the opening to Pirates curse.
If you've already got Pirates Curse, just play that. If you enjoy it you can go back and play the others with no concerns really. They're pretty self contained.

When they jump, attack them, and it'll reset their jumping. You basically juggle them at that point.
And with the sound waves they attack with, run the opposite direction then jump towards them to go over them.
