It really was about 10 years ago when physical media for PC's started to become ousted by the internet's ability to stream data.
even 20 years ago, CD drives were actually very expensive for their technology then, it wasn't until about 1998 did CD technology become far cheaper and more affordable.
Also having a CD drive in the bay when you turn off the computer is harmless, this isn't Windows 98, the computer won't say "no bootable media found"

What was the problem with that? I guess you could have set up the CD/DVD drive as a boot device, leading to confusion on the next boot, but generally this wasn't an issue as far as I recall.
I've had a few DVDs that prevented the PC from booting up though. Never figured out if it was the drive or the individual DVD...I just have bad karma with these fucking pieces of shit so I am kind of glad there's so few optical media still around

There's a small hole on the front of most DVD drives that you can stick thin but hard wire (unwinded paper clip is fine) in to unlock the tray and eject it a little. Then you just open it manually, take the disk out and close it.
