What's the last really big open world game that had absolutely no quick travel system of any kind?
>>
MGSV, if you don't count the helicopter. Earlier than that... Shadow of the Colossus? I can't think of anything relatively recent.
>>
>>322221313
MGSV has the delivery trucks
>>
>>322221381
Shit, you're right.

Did Mad Max have fast travel? I haven't played that one.
>>
modern gamers are too dumb to actually travel around themselves
has to be instant or they get bored and start checking their phone
>>
>>322221927
While this is a topic for discussion, my point was what was the most recent game without it?
>>
>>322222075
ok. dark souls until you get the lord vessel?

ultima VII had multiple fast travel systems btw
>>
>>322222371
" Up to a certain point " doesn't count.

I know ultima had fast travel, it was just the first gaming-related world map that I could think of, which I thought would be an appropriate thumbnail for the thread.
>>
Elite: Dangerous

Nothing about travel is remotely quick
>>
Brutal Legend perhaps? I don't remember it having any kind of fast travel but your car and stuff helped you move around quickly

Fast travel is good anyway, you don't want ot spend an eternity travelling between points of interest
>>
>>322221059

How many big open worlds have no quick travel at all in general?
They all have some form of fast travel like teleport spells or carriages.
>>
Beyond Good and Evil
GTA V?
NIER (?)
I really don't know
>>
>>322223121
this. if you're going to disqualify spells/items like the lord vessel and in-fiction fast travel like carriages and boats, then I can't think of anything. maybe some old 8-bit games.

even legend of zelda has the whistle
>>
Desert Bus

And don't you tell me that isn't a large scale game, takes like a fucking hour to get across the map at top speed if you just go in a straight line
>>
No good open world game with an actual large world has no form of quick travel at all. That's bad game design.

Just because modern game design is lazy and poorly implements it doesn't mean it's an inherently bad mechanic.
>>
>>322222813
>>322224139
Never said it was a bad mechanic, guys, just talking about what the last fast travel-less game was.

I think so far the two that were correct were Shadow of the Colossus and Beyond Good and Evil ( Unless I'm forgetting something from either of those ).

>>322222571 said Elite, but I haven't played that one so I don't know about that one.
>>
Mount and Blade if that fits the criteria.
>>
>>322223238
In Nier you can fast travel with the boats

dont all GTAs have the taxis?
>>
>>322222075
Farcry 2?
Not the 3 or 4, those are shit.
>>
>>322224139
This, Dragon's Dogma found the perfect balance of this with Ferrystones.
>>
>>322225373
Farcry 2 has the bus stations.
>>
>>322224574
it doesn't feel very fast when you're escorting caravans from Suno to Arremad (or whatever that Sarrinid town's called)
>>
>>322221059
What's a paladin?
>>
>>322224574

You can speed up time.
>>
>>322221059
Dragon's Dogma, I think.

Damn, I miss games that made you trek everywhere, it made their worlds seem way bigger than they really were. Being able to teleport anywhere really shrinks the game world, even if it is massive.

Captcha: Select Mountains
>>
Jak 3
>>
>>322221927
Why should I want to travel around a giant world if there is fucking nothing in it?
>>
>>322221059
Well, not pic related, that's for sure.
>>
>>322221059
I think the goal for an open world game should be not to not have a fast travel system, but more to have interesting ways to get around. More than just walking or teleporting to a location. Multiple methods of transport like animals, cars, trains, carriages, etc are what make it interesting.

What game does this well? I...cant think of one. Though I have liked all the different vehicles (+elephant) in the Far Cry games.
