I personally think it was because there were less video games. Since the market was not as crowded or split betweem Console, PC, Portable, or Mobile now. Indie games and App developers, plus now all AAA Developers dont want to take risks.
The close social games are not around anymore, closest one I can think of is The Walking Dead. I really enjoyed the social aspect of that game waiting between chapters and learning about the game together.

I have owned OoT on 3ds since it came out, I reached becoming adult in the first week and never touched it again.
