Came here looking for this thread. Holy shit what a disappointing game. Absolutely no imagination. Is it even the same tram that made fallout 3? The main character is such a ridiculous faggot. The voice acting is terrible. The missions are just "hey anon, raiders are attacking us, go kill them." Fuck does it suck. There used to be a story behind every town and every house and there were some actually gratifying returns for exploring shit. I blow through all my ammo in this game clearing out a town full of ghouls and get shit to show for it. Fuck you Bestheda.

I was really torn about whether I should join the BoS in this game but then I remember it's a Bethesda game so there are no consequences for joining, so I did some of their quests then forgot about them.

Nobody complains that the combat was improved, they complain that the entire game is built around combat. In New Vegas when you walk into Nipton and see the Legion has crucified everyone, you start a conversation and find out what happened, then choose what to do. When you show up at the NCR Correctional facility where the Powder Gangers hang out you start a conversation and choose what to do.
In Fallout 4 every location and NPC is just there for the shooting gallery. You walk into a vault full of Triggermen and they shoot on sight. You walk into the Combat Zone and everyone shoots on sight. You walk into a race track for robots and everyone shoots on sight. The entire world only exists to give you things to shoot at. The only way to find out anything about characters or lore is to kill everyone then read their terminals and diary entries after the fact. You can't actually engage with these characters or participate in the story of the world in any meaningful way. You're just there to shoot things and then be told a story that Bethesda already decided on ahead of time.

Hit the nail on the head. I liked how dark 3 and NV were. The emptiness I felt when I walked into Vault 81 and it was just a regular vault with no defining qualities.

It's not bad bad, it just fails to live up to expectations.
I'd almost forgotten about the game until now, haven't played it in literally over a month. I played to level 18 then rerolled a melee character, played on survivor difficulty from the get-go and the first 10 or so levels were difficult, then everything became easy again.
I've already become so strong no combat scenario can challenge me, even on the highest difficulty and I don't find the story or exploring parts much fun either. I don't know, to me it was just a very mediocre and forgetable game. It was fun initially but grew repetetive very quickly.
