It's hard to imagine at first.(I still can't quite accept it)
But if you think about it, it has to do with the relation of the distance Chykka is away from Samus, to how much screen it should fill, to how far it needs to move.
When you start considering all the factor, then it makes sense that it's so big. Because it's flying at a distance. In order to compensate for visibility, they scaled it larger, and then scaled the room larger to trick the eye into thinking it isn't quite as big as it actually is.

The hate isn't overblown. It's just appears that way, because it's a large collect of dislikes.
If one person says, "I dislike what I'm seeing", then you wouldn't say it's overblown. But because it's 82,000 people saying "I dislike what I'm seeing", then you feel the weight of the overwhelming collective. So it feels stronger than what it actually is.
Why they expected Metroid fans to respond positively to something that is completely unlike Metroid, after the disappointing release of Other M in 2010, is absolutely insane. From both a creative and business perspective. They should have just said it's a brand new game by the makers of Metroid.
