I only do this if the game is poorly designed and excessively cheap and/or unfun at hard.

Unless there is a achievement for it, but I still regret keeping it on because it'd be more fun on a lower difficulty. It's usually games that simply crank up damage and HP that are unfun on hard+

I have had two more levels of Spider-man Shattered Dimensions to finish for ages, but haven't bothered because hard difficulty pretty much accentuates the games flaws ten fold. On the other hand I've already beaten all the other levels on hard, so I might as well finish it on hard. Whenever I can find the fortitude to suck it up & finish it.
>>

That game makes you earn your regenerating health by putting points into Force Healing.

I almost did that with butcher bay, bullet sponge enemies that can one hit you when you walk around a corner

Mass Effect is just fucked up in terms of progression. You hit that first boss & it's next to impossible at the level your character is at on normal.

Most games recently have a tier between normal and ULTRA hard.

Witcher 3, Ninja Gaiden 2(not recent but an example), Halo, etc

Normal is easy, hard is normal, Heroic/Extreme/whatever is hard, and then Master Ninja/Legendary/Impossible is the wiki/savescum/call your friend difficulty.

These are facts.

I feel like I'm the only one that posts about this game on /v/ but Crypt of the NecroDancer had a great difficulty model.

>Game takes 5-60 minutes to complete for experienced players

>Initial characters are forgiving, slow paced, or powerful

>Completing the game unlocks new characters

>New characters are much more challenging to use

>Final characters to unlock are very challenging

Opposed to like, Fallout 4 where its literally >Easiest you do 2x damage they do 0.5 Legendary they do 2x '' '''

I'm really pleased with this game. I play it once a day and enjoy it. It's not really a binge game where you stay up until 5am playing it until you are physically sick but its fun as fuck and I can play it every day.

>Not just playing on default difficulty unless there is a developer statement about a difficulty above default being the "intended" difficulty.

Unless there is something to be gained from harder difficulties such as skill carrying over to multiplayer, game content or a story related thing.

There is no reason to ever not play default difficulty as other settings probably aren't even balanced or thoroughly tested anyway, it's literally pointless.

More often than not Medium/default is too easy anyway and you'll just want to get the game over and done with.

It pisses me off because I don't know why he puts himself through that if he can't fucking do it without getting angry and complaining to me for hours.

I couldn't give a shit what difficulty he plays on, but him bashing his head against a brickwall for no gain just looks seems fucking retarded.

>>
>>322185093
I do want a challenge, but I want a well designed challenge, not scaled bullshit that doesn't matter and wasn't really tested.

If a developer is like "Yeah we actually designed the game around hard difficulty" then I'll play at that difficulty, but 90% of the time default difficulty is what the game is designed around.

"Oh you gimped my character to give me a challenge on very and boosted everything around me" Fuck off with that, make the game actually challenging in creative ways and not by weakening the player.
>>
Lowering the difficulty pretty much entirely depends on how death/respawn works.
Like using Spec Ops and Uncharted as examples, Uncharted has no loads and puts yoh at the start of whatever gunfight you died in, so high difficulties are fun, while Spec Ops has like, 40 second load times and checkpoints are often before a scripted event you gotta redo every fucking time.
Set backs on death depend on how often and easy it is to die. I dont mind dying in say Dark Souls, cause the deaths are pretty spaced out while in a shooter you can die pretty fast after respawn in some parts.
>>
>>322177130
Because you don't play on anything past normal.

>RPG on hard is too easy
>Can't change difficulty modes without starting over

I hate RPG difficulty settings, you can never be sure whether you're getting artificial bullshit or genuinely well developed difficulty without risking invested time.
