I wasn't a real big fan of grinding out abilities. I mean in VII you had materia, but there were ways to supplement the process to speed up materia growth and the game was so well paced that it never felt like you had to grind out materia levels.
IX, on the other hand, had that system of grinding out weapons and armor in order to permanently learn abilities I believe. I found the system quite boring and tedious, especially if you found a weapon with a great ability but it was weak as shit.

There were items in 9 to speed up ability learning process by a wide margin, in fact I would say that the skill system in 9 was far easier then 7.
You would take about 1/10 the time learning a new skill in 9 then learning the next rank of a materia you wanted to have high up, the only time this changed was in the northern crater at the very end of the game because you had access to mobs that would give you obscene amounts of ap towards a materia.

That list honestly is a very solid list as far as video game soundtracks go. You got SOTC, Streets of Rage 2 and even Silent Hill on there. It's a surprisingly very solid list with more credible sources then "insert random /v/ neckbeards opinion here."

Plot is much better overall I think. Although IX is just as good in many ways, battle is slower but its fun, 4 party members in one battle is also sweet. And I loved the system of learning abilities from armor and weapons, although materias just as good. I think they're equal in many ways but boy IX wasn't good at the end plot wise, not memorable at all.
