I was going to say that of most JRPGs. They just feel like barebone techdemo RPGmaker games.
Most developers just seem to use the same engine with only minor changes. They all seem to play the same with the visual style static characters and little to no actual movement in cutscenes, besides skewing character portraits. Why do they even bother with an overworld maps if they are just connected dots on a board? And the maps always just seem to be linear paths with one branch off point.

Western games are about "experiences", which is why they have such wide appeal. They're theme parks, with friendly guides to help you along and guard rails on all of the rides so 5 year olds can't injure themselves.
Japanese games are games, for both better and worse. They are what they are, and you can take them or leave them. They aren't terribly concerned with whether you understand their various systems, whether you're having fun moment to moment, or whether a certain section/activity is more monotonous/frustrating than fun. But, there's an honesty and a purity to them that is simply unrivaled in big-budget western game development, and struggling through a thorny Japanese game's layers to hit that core of sugary goodness is deeply satisfying.
