Because people are fucking stupid. Portal 1 was fantastic because of the slow burn dialogue coming from a single character. No clutter, just mystery and the EXACT right amount of humor. Portal 2 decided to throw all that away and make every character a catchphrase machine.

The Oddworld series has a pretty great surrealist thoroughfare. They aren't necessarily comedy games but they do employ comedy as a worldbuilding tool and have some great comedic setpieces.

It's certainly not hard and not even the best of the Arkham games, but Arkham Knight made me feel this. Playing as Batman, trying to push your allies away because he fears what his enemies or even he could do to them. An army of trained killers overtaking an entire city. All of this villains teaming together to bring down their attacks at the same time to overwhelm you.
The game's not hard or anything, but it all takes place over the course of one night, so it feels like a real monumental thing for you to win.

I only liked Zinyak and Nolan North getting mad when he interrupts Biz Markie. Everything else felt pretty middle of the road which is a shame considering the main villain could've filled up a lot of those "meh" spaces in the humor. It's not like Volition has the integrity to NOT have made him a meme character anyways, might as well had enjoyed him.
