The series got a lot worse after it was brought back when Fox canceled it. For me, there was one joke that perfectly illustrates what's wrong with the show.
In the episode "Luck of the Fryrish," the crew goes to a horse race, and the end result is so close the announcer calls it a "quantum finish." They then show a picture of the race, at which point the Professor angrily tears up ticket and yells, "No fair! You changed the outcome by measuring it!" A perfectly simple joke outlining a pretty esoteric scientific phenomenon.
On the other hand, in one of the post-revival episodes, Fry becomes a cop, and him and URL (the police-bot) are chasing a fleeing perp. After they stop him, it's revealed the guy is Erwin Schrodinger. This is the transcript of what happens next:
Fry: DNA and career chip, please.
URL: Erwin Schrödinger, huh? What's in the box, Schrödinger?
Erwin Schrödinger: Um... A cat, some poison, und a cesium atom.
