It's the final area on the best ending, the Blood-Stained Sanctuary. Lots of little cherubs to fight and the final boss at the end.
yeah i played through a couple of years back going for the full ending. It took me about a day of playing to get through the first part of hell and reach ballos. It took me another two to finally beat him. Watching the ending was probably one of the most satisfying moments in vidya for me.

Yes and it was ok for a free game, amazing in fact but I am kinda glad I didn't pay money for it. Was kinda too short to be honest with almost no actual exploring. Hell with the town being the hub there wasn't even backtracking if I recall assuming you got everything the first time around.

If you've got the Life Pot, he's pretty easy with Blade level 2 and Super Missiles. Spam attack hard enough and third form is probably the only one that'll last more than ten or fifteen seconds.

You can beat Ballos reasonably easy with either Finished Pole Star or Nemesis and you only have to get upgrade canisters for missiles. Life Pot is kinda mandatory though.
For really good time I'd suggest Spider, Nemesis and Missiles but I've gotten second best menu music without Spider and I don't feel like doing better.
Remember that you can stand in the eye of all Boulderforms and blast away.
Yeah but it took me some time to beat Hell though. I got stuck at Hell until I decided to replay through the game again just for the life pot so I can actually stand a chance against Ballos.

I played it. I played it again and tried to save Curly, but I didn't realize that you had to talk to her multiple times in the water level. I want to get the best ending, but I don't want to spoil myself. And this makes me feel a horrible gut wrenching feeling like pretty much nothing else.
Has anybody played Jenka's Nightmare? The latest 3.something version, not the fairly shitty original or remastered versions?

If you want to know what you missed, I'll try to give a spoiler-free explanation.
Sounds like you made it to the water area after the Core - just don't leave Curly there or let her die, then do her side quest at the Plantation. After that she should give you a medal or something like that to show you finished her side story.
At that point the Last Cave will be the Last Cave (Hidden), with some noticeable changes to the layout. If you've made it that far, just make sure to check the save point after you deal with the Doctor and Friends and you should be good.

Sort of, yeah.There's a book nearby that teaches you to deal with waterlogged robots. You have to take care of the water problem and make sure to bring her with you, else she's locked in the Labyrinth forever.
The rest is pretty self-explanatory anyway.

Neither of those things matter.

This matters, immensely. Also the music is great.

Then it should seem even more amazing. Games that value gameplay and technical perfection over plot and characters are far more rare today than they were 10 years ago. Cave Story was a good throwback to old school run n' guns and people liked it for nostalgia, but it endured because it's an example of what more developers should strive for.
tl;dr: People like Cave Story because it's basically what every modern "AAA" game isn't.
