In this case, Dragons Dogma has pretty big plans on the horizon. Capcom realizes they have a potential cash cow on their hands and they are fixing to milk it. They have to raise awareness of it and bring it to other platforms before their announcement of a proper DD MMORPG. Not talking about DD online, either. It's likely going to be at least another year before you hear anything official, but I would not be surprised if a surprise "leak" made its way onto reddit around August-ish.

Just tested it on Xbox 360. Used 3 grand cannons and then hit them. Frame rate dropped hard. Probably single digits.
Not as bad as when you do this and there are enemies around, but still massive frame rate drops.

The only time it doesn't cause FPS drops is when you use it once with no enemies around. Which is pretty rare given it's an offensive ability designed to be used while enemies are around...

Your definiton of "playable" is simply very different to ours.

And I did it thinking "damn this game is good, I could probably put 100h+ into this".
