A rank is good, hell may even be impressive for casuals but S rank is perfect or near perfect.
If you use a potion you pretty much have no chance for S rank. If you can't beat the boss fast enough you are most likely fuck for S rank. Style is both combos and how much you get hit, not getting hit being more importation. Most likely the deciding factor if you will get a S or a A on that boss. For a S rank assuming you get hit at least once you must still like like 90% of your health and dealt full combos on the boss in a timely near speedrun-like fashion. Otherwise the only way to get a S rank is by not getting hit whatsoever during the whole battle.
Your rank will decide on your bonus stat rewards. High ranks on early bosses are borderline required for high ranks on later bosses.
I kinda wish I could mod it so it will always be S rank so I can actually enjoy the game. If you choose retry more than five times it will become impossible to get S rank on that boss. A good habit is to completely reload and walk all of the way from the save point per time you want to take a swing at the boss.
