What games would you guys recommend? I don't rely care for mario or pokemon, I loved animal crossing though.

Rune Factory is pretty great. Similar to animal crossing and harvest moon.
Literally the only problems with Nintendo is region locking, which is only a problem if you want to play the 1 or 2 good games that don't get localized, and the censorship.

A friend of mine works IT and brings his 3DS or Vita to work most days. Some of his coworkers give him a little shit for it, but others actually discuss video games with him. And even some of the dudes that give him shit have some old game they actually enjoyed in their youth and like to talk about.

If you've got a modern mobile device, check out Siralim. It's kinda like a weird roguelike pokemon thing, and it's surprisingly fun and deep. Plus you can get up to level 10 for free, so you can decide whether you like it.

I bring my N3DS and a Pokéwalker belt clip to my job everyday. But then again, my job is a privately-owned tax accounting firm owned by a personal friend of the family and I'm one of the only three employees there, I have a lot more leeway.
The drive there passes by a McDonald's everyday, so lots of easy StreetPasses.

Well, depending on what you're into :
Majesty - They actually made a mobile version of the oldschool majesty strategy games, and the port is shockingly good, if you can get over the slightly cramped view angle
Mage Gauntlet - A really fun linear story-based RPG with a neat spell system and solid, if simple combat
Wayward Souls - Made by the Mage Gauntlet guys, a rougelite game with the same general gameplay, multiple characters, all your typical modern roguelite stuff.
Tiny Thief - A free level-based point and click adventure thing, reminiscent of old flash puzzle games. It's cute.
Stick Ranger - A somewhat odd JRPG that you have to get used to due to it's engrish and unusual physics- and entity- based gameplay, but a quality time killer if you get into it. Plus, it's free and completely devoid of microtransactions.

Out There - lonely spaceman roguelite. Much bigger emphasis on exploration and story than on combat, but there's a ton of stuff in it.
Sorcery series - An RPG in the vein of choose your own adventure books. Some intricate bullshit to be found if you dedicate the time to these, but it's primarily text based, so be ready to read.
Spaceteam - Spaceship bridge panic simulator. Excellent for groups or friends or parties if you can convince 'em to try it.
Desert Golfing : Ultra-minimalistic procedurally generated golfing game. Hit ball into hole, move to next area, repeat. Literally nothing else to it. Very zen.
Plague Inc - Based on the classic virus taking over the world game. It's cool, though kinda slow paced.
Militia - A puzzle game that's sorta like a weird version of chess. Not really sure what to compare this one to, but it's neat.
