Actually, the mixing thing with Dio and Vinny Appice was for Live Evil. When Dio rejoined Sabbath in the early 90s, he was just being a bitter old prick who rejoined for the money. Powell and Nicholls were livid that Iommi had canned Tony Martin and Neil Murray and brought in Dio and Geezer to try and crack America again, and as a result, the early sessions for Dehumanizer were extremely tense.

Plus to add to this, Lock Up the Wolves didn't do brilliantly, plus Dio's brand of 80s metal was seen as passé by that stage what with grunge and alt. metal on the rise, so rejoining Sabbath, who were cool again after being considered old-hat for most of the 80s, would've been a step-up.
