would Shantae fans on /v/ recommend this on the 3DS VC? i've only played the Pirate's Curse and i'm interested in the series. didn't grow up playing video games though so retro games can be difficult at times for me.

I've only played the original cartridge. That version was fun, so if the port was done well, it should be good. Rotty's Race will fucking murder you though.
It holds up well, but it isn't without it's problems. The sprites are rather large and the screen is rather small so you often times find yourself making leaps of faith.
And it's pretty unforgiving. The overworld enemies will fuck you up for a while, especially at night
That said it's a wonderful game. I love it and you will too

i do. though i am concerned about its lack of an in-game map, the obnoxious enemy placement, and the leaps of faith issue. doesn't help that i played PC first. though i am genuinely interested in the series. i'm debating between getting both this and RR: Director's Cut whenever that gets released or just skip this one to get Shovel Knight and get the latter.

I first played it on the 3DS VC about two years ago.
I thought it was great but it didn't really click for me until you get the first transformation in the first dungeon.
The only part I genuinely disliked was one section before the final dungeon when you have to find a floating lighthouse in one of the desert areas.
The area is really long and tall while the screen is zoomed in so unless you look up exactly where it is or have done it several times before, you're in for a lot of trial and error tracking it down.

Not that I remember.
I just went back and forth in the correct corridor over and over again until I hit it.
The fact that it's hard to get an accurate read of where you're moving to when you don't have any parts of the ground visible doesn't help either.
Despite that, I absolutely loved all three of the games (although Risky's Revenge I loved a lot less) and I can't wait until Half-Genie Hero, even if I don't like the whole "2D sprites on 3D environments" visual style.
It worked in Paper Mario but that's about the only game I think it looks nice in.

basically the first game ends with you stopping the villain, and the second game is her extracting her revenge. hence the sequels title (Risky's Revenge)
