Now answer me honestly.

In Sword Art Online, the characters went into a Virtual Reality MMO and were unable to log out. Forceful attempts to disconnect them from the game would result in the characters death. The characters were informed that the only way to exit the game was to complete it, by going through the content and then defeating the final boss. ( For scale, there are 100 floors, you start on floor 1 and it took months for the characters to reach floor 2 ) Each floor has it's own boss which must be defeated to reach the next floor. The bosses are very hard to defeat and require a lot of highly skilled players to be able to defeat it.

If you die in the game you die in real life. You can be healed ingame by using consumables. You can form guilds with other players or play alone. You can focus on combat or you can focus on other skills like fishing or cooking etc. Other players cannot attack you in towns which are known as safe zones, but outside the safe zones, they can attack and kill you.

It's a beautiful world, the seasons change the animals and NPC's are almost lifelike. You don't feel hunger but you can still taste the food in this world. You do however, feel pain.

With this knowledge. Would you log in? It could mean your life, but it could also be the greatest adventure of your life.

I know it's a sub-par anime but it's an interesting plot, not a new one but still interesting none the less.

I'm about to log out of real life, so yeah.

>>322064459
I'll read all of this right now, but here is why I actually like this show:
1)Calls out people who preorder for being retarded, going so far as to threaten them with death
2)Calls out people who play as the opposite gender in MMO's, exposing them as faggots

I don't even hate or think SAO is particularly awful, but it's just dull to watch. It doesn't offend any standards or sensibilities I have, it's just really, really boring.

OP here.

Is nothing in your real life holding you back? If I didn't have any commitments I'd probably log in quite quickly but as it stands now, I don;t know if I could willingly do it. As much as I would love that kind of adventure, I'm just not sure.

>>322068240
Well, if we follow Sword Art Online, then your appearance in game replicates your real life body exactly. However everyone starts off with the same basic levels/skills. So at the start you're able to run as fast and hit enemies for the same amount of damage as everyone else, it doesn't matter what body type/gender you are.

People trapped in MMO.

In Log Horizon peoples memories get fucked every time you die. Despite it not being perma death, it feels even more terrifying. People are fucking trapped in a shitty fucked up world where walking outside the town gets you killed. One of the biggest problems in Log Horizon and feel don't want to live in an MMO world, don't want to forget about their loved ones and their old lives.

In Overlord its a single person who is trapped in an MMO world. MC plays the role of a an evil Lich who is 10x stronger than anything. Mix of comedy and really dark gruesome type stuff.

I try to explain this to people when the mass hysteric hatred for Sword Art Online is brought up. It's wish fulfillment for gamers, but still interesting. There are women everywhere, no magic, and while levels do matter a big part of your strength is your personal skill. Your levels just help increase that.

You don't need to eat or sleep. There are hundreds of fantasy environments to explore. You could live years on a single floor, and there are a hundred of them.

I'd love to see this scenario done right. Maybe 100,000 players per region (North America, Japan, Euro, Aus, Canada) that are all excluded from each other until they reach a certain point, then they open contact and travel between one another and start competing and forming allegiances.

>you will never see US/AUS alliance against Canada/European Axis, while Japan goes full Empire mode and gets overpowered as fuck

So if I spend months, if not years, in an MMO how does my body stay alive irl?

How does it eat, drink, sleep, etc? Who pays the bills? Wouldn't anyone just find me hooked up to a VR device and unplug me?

What if there's an electrical outage and the device shuts itself off?

What if the online connection goes out during all this?

Doesn't seem very viable in the timeframes suggested.

That latter part is almost how Log Horizon is. The world they are in is based on a slightly small scaled earth and each region is like a server, all connected, but require traveling for days/months to get there.

Tried watching Log Horizon. Shit is fucking boring.

I just think there's a lot you can do with that idea. I mean, you have some pretty high stakes but a really fun scenario to work with. Plenty of room for action and drama, as well as comedy and light hearted moments.

But seriously I want my japanese gamer empire.
>>
>>322064459

I would not log in because the chances of dying from external power surge/outage are too high. Now if it was more of a fantasy gimmick like Log Horizon where I don't have to worry about things outside of the game killing me, I would definitely log in.

Even a carbon copy of the SAO MMO would just be fucking amazing to experience. I can't even put into words how badly I want to play something like a VR MMO.

>>322070132

Well if we follow the SAO then as soon as you find out in game that you can't log out, the news spreads IRL very shorty afterwords. So we're talking hours before people know what's going on and people can't log out and forceful log outs mean death.

The VR headset has an internal battery which has enough power to last a few weeks, enough time to transport anyone logged into the MMO to a hospital. From then on you're put on the drip and plugged back into the mains.

The internet, I can't remember how they explained it but I assume it has built in Wifi and it's easy enough to set up a connection to transfer people to hospitals.

If the world has no taste for you, then die. If you wish to find good in the world, then find it. But whatever you do do not spend your time bemoaning your fate on an image board. By all odds, inaction and indecision are what made you depressed in the first place.

>>
>>322069951
>It's wish fulfillment for gamers
I cannot agree with that statement. There's too much wrong with the SAO world that people who actually played games would be annoyed at. One of the biggest issues I have with the whole series is that it doesn't take any advantage of the whole setting. SAO could of just as easily been one of those transported into a fantasy world story because of how little regard they cared about the system mechanics.
>>
>>322071661
People who are legitimately depressed have chemical imbalances in the brain you retard. You can't just decide to be better.
>>
>>322070813

OP here

I'm content with my life, sure there's always something else to do but I'm alright just now.

It's not permanently, It would only be until the final boss was defeated which would take years mind you, but you would not be there forever. Ultimately it's up to the skill of the players that determine how long they are in the MMO.

I just found it a very interesting plot and wondered what people would do given to choice to log in optionally. Personally I have a lot of commitments which would force me to say no but I'd have to stop and think for a second about it, would I risk my life for what could be the greatest adventure I might ever know?

Depressed anons:

Hang in there, just keep trying to meet people, even online.
I met someone a few months ago who completely turned my life around, I used to want to kill myself every morning when I woke up, but now I want to wake up just to talk to them every day, it took my whole life to find this person but I firmly believe we'll be together forever, we've already met irl and have plans to live together in the near future.

Sometimes it's still painful to live, but talking to them makes my mood change so fast it's incredible.
You won't get anywhere if you're too close minded though, if people actively try to get to know you, just go with it, these types of people are rare and so worth the effort.
Even if it doesn't work out, they'll have made such an impact on your life that it'll seem meaningless, I never did anything before, now I get up every day, make a good breakfast, walk my dog, get some exercise, find new things I like, etc, etc, even if that person was suddenly gone my life has been made easier as a result of them existing.

Good luck. /blog

I've been trying to fix myself for years. I've tried so many different medications, treatments, counselling and therapy, but none of it makes me better. I'm plagued by memories that I can't get rid of, but by all accounts they aren't that bad - so why can't I stop?

I think the worst thing about it is that I agree with you. I agree that I shouldn't be depressed, that I should just be able to get over it. I just don't understand why I can't.

>>
i am just here to say that this fucking hugbox disgusts me and all you cunts should off yourself and make the world a better place also stream live on twitch or whatever or fuck off to tumblr to whine about your life.

On topic:
SAO seems boring due to giving some random people OP superpowers with skill being near irrelevant and with it completely concentrated on combat makes it boring to live in. Also you look as scrub you are IRL so screw that.

Log horizon is superior because you can be cute courtesan intruguing around the royal court or a meido being nice to your master or just trying to cook delicious cakes and you are as useful as frontline combatant, personal experience is important. Also it seems as more interesting world to live in.
>>
>>322074319
Well the chance of that is zero, I already know everything about them and same for them, we've met irl so I know about their living conditions and they know about mine, basically we both fucking hate living where we currently do so we're going to live together elsewhere.

And even if it did happen, like I said, I have much more motivation and happiness now, I doubt it'd go away after they left.

>>322075254
Anywhere, depends on the type of people you want to meet.
I meet a lot of likeminded people on 4chan, on various boards, you'll have to look really hard on the shittier boards but there's still some really good people on them.

How?
I don't really know, most of my friends are my friends because they talked to me first, just put yourself out there, make it very clear you're not just some random asshole, you have to be a nice person if you want nice people to be your friends.

I feel ya man. I used to play FFXI and I really miss some of those people.

Funny enough I've been best friends with one girl I met there for eight years now

The person in question I met online accidentally via a dating thing... we weren't in the same state but we just kinda continued talking

Suddenly it stopped without warning.

The irony is right before it happened we were talking about meeting and she sent me this long text about how important I was to her

What a joke.
>>
>stuck in an MMO

The only OP skill I saw was the duel wield talent, but apparently that was meant to be in the game and given only as a 1 time deal to 1 player due to there progression or some shit like that.

The world is not completely concentrated on combat, the anime was and did have a few filler episodes which did show what other people were doing in the world. Like shopkeepers, information traders, people doing skill based stuff like fishing etc. You do all manner of things in the SAO world not just pursue combat. It's all about what you want to do, how you want to play it. You want to go fish in that lake? go do it, cook, eat or sell the fish to a vendor or another player next, or just keep fishing. It's up to you.

Why did they ruin an anime that could have been great with fucking atrocious romance garbage? I was really liking the show for the first 7 or so episodes, then suddenly there was an episode where the protag and that awful girl were in a log cabin together and it was one of the cheesiest things I've ever fucking seen.
>>
>>322075936

Aye it's a shame when you fall out of contact with your old buddies.

Sorry to hear though, sounds strange. I could rattle off the explanations like how she might've lost your details/sudden emergency. But I dunno, shit just happens I guess. Hope you're keeping well.
>>
>>322075936
That sucks. I met my fiancée on an mmo and after a few years of seeing each other for a few weeks at a time I moved and am currently living with her.
Long distance isn't for everyone though, that's for sure
>>
>>322076242

Well I didn't create the thread to talk about which was the better anime, I know SAO isn't very good.

I guess, stripped down to the basics, is, would you risk your life to pursue what could be the greatest adventure of your life?
>>
>>322076384
Because the author never actually played an MMO before and just chose that setting because it was cool.
>>
>>322067207
.hack fag here, a lot of players were put into comas and stuck in the game, not just one.

And that's exactly what happened in SAO, they went into comas.
>>

Yeah I'm fine, it just sucks a bit. Between this and other horrid real life experiences it'll put me off online dating for a long time though, I think.

>they immediately take a liking to her, and I become a third wheel
Even through trying to make a better game for them to play in, they never seem to give two shits about me. I would probably just leave because I don't feel that well playing with them, but they're basically my only friends right now thanks to real life friends going to shit.
>>
>>322076242
There are secret recipes in SAO and who knows what else because it was destroyed before majority of players could play it. Reminder that SAO was written during early 2000s, before WOW turned the genre into tank/healer/dps CD spam.

I mean, I don't know if we'll get full neural interface VR ready for the mass market in the next fifty years or so, but considering the tech progression of things like smartphones, we are going to see some fucking amazing breakthroughs in VR tech in the next ten years, let alone twenty.

I'm really excited to see what happens.

Fuck off, people kill themselves because they've the will and motivation to live entirely
A picture telling them to go out and do shit isn't going to change a damn thing and chances are they've already thought about leaving it all behind and decided against in anyway
It's obvious that the post and the picture were made by somebody who's never experienced depression or despair a single day of their life and thinks that it amounts to nothing more than feeling sad.
Here's a much better picture made by someone who actually fucking gets it and not some retard pretending to understand.

But I don't Want to die, I'm just saying a shot of glory eternal or boring monotony.

>>322071374

Something to think about that was never brought up in the anime/light novel:

Let's say that Kirito failed in his quest. Let's say that all the fighters failed in their quest to get to the end of level 100. The only people left alive in the world would be casuals that only rarely leave the towns and player killers hiding just outside of the towns. What then?

Would the game's creator get bored and let everyone go free? How long is the government willing to keep people on life support until they decide it's getting too expensive?

Even if you wanted to spend the rest of your life in a virtual reality simulation, unless you were independently wealthy and there was a dedicated staff taking care of your body irl before you went in, you would only get a certain amount of time until either the government pulled the plug or your frail irl body died from some complication.
>>
>>322064459

I liked the pseudo-medieval aesthetics of SAO, a lot of the towns and floors looked comfy, so I think I would. No combat though, just open a shop, restaurant, or blacksmith, and wait for someone else to finish. It'd take a couple years, so it'd be like a chill ass vacation in a cool fantasy world.

Read SAO Progressive. All its about is the SAO world and adventures. It's officially a retconning of it and the author's "true intent" of the scenario without needing to rush to an conclusion.
>>
>>322082957
That shit ever going to finish? The latest LN apparently only goes through the 5th floor. I don't think SAO can maintain popularity for that long, in fact it's already lost a lot of steam.

>to be anything significant you have to work your ass off
>you can get any skillset because army pays for that shit
>you're stuck in that world just like you're stuck in the army for 3 years
>you can travel to all sorts of unique worlds aka humanitarian aid
>you can make groups and do shit together
>only dif is complete lack of choice or freedom in some areas

and a shitload of people don't want to be in the army. probably because reality tells us that there's a 0% chance of becoming a asspuller like kirito and a 99% chance of being raped by slimes. Though I guess you cant be a loli in the army though.

Of course I'd do it.
As some anon said on /r9k/ there is no mystery in the real world. No more frontiers to explore. I want that desperately.
>>
>>322086434
I kind of agree.

I value a sense of wonder and awe pretty highly, and I'm hoping that VR will bring us closer and closer to being able to explore new, fantastical, limitless worlds.

>tfw the first VR MMO isn't far off
>>
>>322064459
I'd log in. Not because I'm depressed or anything but because it is a much more interesting and fulfilling life. You are given the opportunity to be somebody extraordinary. Many people in real life become your average person, not all of us can impact the world like a genius or be influential leaders. In a world like SAO you could be somebody that makes an impact on the lives of others and through your actions. It's a rare opportunity most people aren't presented with like going to the moon. It is a unique experience and I would take advantage of it so I could be apart of something unique and possibly be immortalized in history.
>>
>>322086937
>the first VR MMO isn't far off
The first VR MMOs won't be very good. If they have oculus and vive they will be neat at first but technology is still too limited to make an experience that is 1/10th as immersive as SAO. We will probably get close enough in our lifetime but who knows how long that will be. Wasn't Oculus in development for like several years? I just want them to make a better version of the VR treadmill thing. Being able to walk around in virtual worlds yourself is essential to me and it gives you a reason to use VR in other genres. Until then, to me using VR for any game will be just like having my face 6 inches away from my monitor. The whole body needs to be immersed in my opinion.
>>
>>322088431
Of course total sensory immersion is going to be incredibly difficult to achieve, but outside of neural interfaces, I think we're gonna get close.

>Wasn't Oculus in development for like several years?
Kickstarted in 2012, releasing Q1 2016 after three or four iterations and improvements on the hardware. Currently at 1080P per eye, 110+ fov, 90Hz refresh rate and 240Hz head and positional tracking rate. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

>I just want them to make a better version of the VR treadmill thing.
Omni treadmills are still a ways off from being market ready, but the tech is out there and working in several forms, albeit still a bit primitive. I totally get the desire for it, though, actually walking around is an incredible help for presence.

>will be just like having my face 6 inches away from my monitor.
Gotta say though, this is patently false. The 3D effect of VR headsets, combined with a field of view that takes up the vast majority of your field of vision, makes you feel like you're there, like you're inside a cockpit, not just looking at a monitor of someone's point of view of being inside a cockpit. It's something that has to be experienced to be understood, for the most part. I totally understand the skepticism, but just look up some firsthand impressions of the CV1 (or wait for people to give their impressions of it at CES) and see for yourself.

I'm done shilling now.
