It's very slow at times, most notably when they clearly ran out of lines but had to fill time so they just did the classic back and forth facial expressions for minutes at a time. But I still love it, it'll always be a classic to me. Integrating it with the games worked really well too.

The initial 4 parts should be done it order; so Sign, the 4 PS2 games (With the each part of the accompanying OVA being watched after you finish the game) then read or watch Legend of the Twilight.
After that, no idea desu, Bandai kept pumping out spin-offs and new stuff, so I'm assuming the series went on for quite a while longer after they revived it post-LotT. Is it still going?

There are video games and anime series that run in parallel. Chronologically I think it goes:
//SIGN = First quadrilogy (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine) > Liminality > //Roots > //GU > whatever new shit they've made that I'm not up to date with
Starting with //SIGN and the original games is a good bet. Probably watch //SIGN first so you can see how the world is adapted in the games, and hopefully it'll make a bit more sense.

Meh. Depends on what you're willing to tolerate. The games aren't very long, don't have much going on in them, and don't have any variation between them. The core gameplay may not be your thing, which would mean it's just not for you.

If you like reading, the "Another Birth" novels follow Blackroses' side of the story through the first 4 games. The A.I. Buster novels are my personal favorites, i would read them anywhere around the 4 games block.

Played through the GU trilogy on emulator recently. I liked it, combat got kind of stale, though. Improves a lot once you can switch between weapons mid-battle.
