I was thinking about getting this series on steam, but would like to know if there's any DC that's essential or if there's any games I should avoid.

Got them all on Steam as they were released... Gameplay is pretty similar across them and they're ports so don't expect better graphics.
Rebirth 1 It's a great remake
Rebirth 2 is good but mk2 was better

If you're going to get them all, humble store still has all 3+DLC for $40.
They're the type of games you can easily play and enjoy if you like cute girls, simple turn based rpg battles, and can stomach internet/video game culture jokes, references and memes.

To be honest, I'd rather just read Nep Nep as a VN. The gameplay is always half-assed, and repetitive. Enemies consist of a trillion recolours and environments repeat over and over again. May as well play Disgaea if I wanted a grindfest - it'd be a deeper, more interesting version of that anyways.
That said, the VN-esque portions are top-tier. Maybe because the characters are so good or because based Noire is voiced by Kana Ueda.

I only played Rebirth 1. It didn't care for it, though it wasn't exactly bad. The combat was decent enough but the areas were bland and a chore to go through, the story didn't really go anywhere, I didn't care for the lolsorandom humor, and I found the music grating. It's a shame because I love the character designs and some of their personalities.
