How do I git gud at roguelikes instead of getting pissed off when I die and going full tilt?
>>
You must embrace suffering until you suffer no more
>>
do roguelikes even give you tutorials?

pretty much every time i die the game just tells me to fuck off and git gud
>>
I had enough of that shit when I was a kid. We have the technology to save games now I see no reason to go through that suffering again.
>>
Because one time you'll have this run that you really enjoyed where all the crazy shit happened

And you will spend the rest of your life trying to get another run that good.

Performance of what?

Exercise?

Doing any kind of drug also improves performance.

You also hurt your body exercising on caffeine (or any drug for that matter).

Eat right and exercise, don't use crutches.

Also, don't fall for the coffee meme.

What are you, 14? Have you ever met a poor person? Have you left your suburb for any reason other than high school and buying bullshit at best buy?

Alright, either you buy a specific round loaf of bread for $3 then make a can of soup ($1), or you go to some casual eatery place and pay $10 for the same, but they make it for you and it seems tastier because of all the salt they use.

Neither of which are things poor people do. Poor people eat a lot of toast. Toast is cheap. Buying special fucking bread for a special fucking bread bowl delight is not a representative meal of poor people. McDonalds is.
>>
Stop thinking of roguelikes as RPGs, and start thinking of them as puzzle games.

Every encounter is a problem that has several solutions.
>>
>>322047549
Minimize risks. Basically the appeal of roguelikes to me is you never get stronger than the shit you're dealing with.

So you've seen xyz before. You feel confident. You get cocky. And it kills you. If you treat every single thing like it can kill you then you do alright. You can still get fucking steamrolled by RNG but that's sadly part of too many roguelikes. But mostly it's risk management. Don't take big risks. Take small risks.

Depends on the roguelike but generally people die from either not having proper knowledge of how much of a risk their situation is and dying unexpectedly or from being too stingy and trying to save a resource that would easily put them out of the dangerous situation and then dying when it doesn't work out

Your escapes and panic buttons are to be used and it's generally best to use them before the turn where you MUST use them or you will die because if one tiny thing goes unexpectedly then it won't be enough
>>
There are ways to git gud but some of them involve breaking the experience by looking up the metagame on how to beat it. Don't try to beat it, just try to get further than you did last time.

What Rougelikes are you playing anyways? If it's something like Nethack you very well can beat the game if you played it right every time, but I don't know how to answer for RNG in some of these newer games.

OP play ivan is a lot of fun.

Eventually you will progress further and further (before dying), but one day you will beat the game.
>>
>>322047674
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup has a pretty good tutorial, in that it gave me the basics and then I had to figure shit out.
>>
>>322047674
Every failed play-through is the tutorial until you win.

When you die to something, you remember what it is and you avoid it next time.

Also most good roguelikes feature a manual that gives vital information.

It's a good false equivalency, considering that flying has 6% of the efficiency of walking, whereas a save system at its worst only loses 50% efficiency.
>>
I feel sorry for people who think they MUST not get angry WHATSOEVER when a game does some lame bullshit.

Like raging like a child, that's shit, but wanting to completely remove all anger means you are a depressed soulless robot.

If you play rogues or rogue likes, one thing is going to be certain. You are going to run into unfair things that SHOULD make you angry.

That is the ENTIRE point of roguelikes.

To get your blood boiling but ultimately you figure out some way to stave off the bullshit.

If you just sat and blankly stared at the screen, died, had no reaction whatsoever, and then just started again, turn the game off.

You've missed the point and also need help.

Only if it's a badly made roguelike. In a well made roguelike, like Nethack, there is literally no way you can be completely fucked over unavoidably (as long as you start without autopickup option enabled, there's about a 1/trillion chance you can instantly die when making a new game from picking up a cross aligned artifact when you spawn)

So you don't know anything and yet you still have a strong opinion?

Sounds like /v/ alright
>>
>>322047549

Depends on the roguelike game in question. Most of them these days are just about grinding. So just level up.

If it's an old one, you're going to need to read guides because those games can be complex as fuck and all kinds of absolutely silly things can happen you'd never expect.
>>
>>322056683
I don't care to memorize release notes for games I don't play anymore, no. However, there are plenty of people who have played dcss more recently than I who do know the updates who would be able to help you.
>>
>>322047728
Losing a save when you die is a FEATURE of the roguelike genre, not a bug. It gives you a very different frame of mind when approaching a difficult situation. When savescumming is available, you'll make a mistake, learn that there's no way out, and then re-load and avoid that situation entirely.

Roguelikes by design will force you to re-assess impossible situations and squeeze a way out of them when you risk losing 10+ hours of work. Items that are typically useless in traditional RPGs suddenly become very valuable.
>>
>>322047549
I want some tasty soup now asshole
>>
>>322056210
ummm no. The point of roguelikes is conquering an incredible challenge through trial and error. If you get into a roguelike for the first time (with no guides) there's no way you should be able to win on your first several attempts.

The whole point is to feel out the game and the mechanics it throws at you, and increase your knowledge and understanding of said mechanics in order to progress and ultimately succeed.

The best roguelikes (once you've gotten used to the game) are made so that once you become more proficient with the items and weapons of the game, you play in a way that gives you multiple options of tackling every given situation. If you die, you should learn from the death and steadily increase your knowledge.

I like roguelikes because it's YOU that's improving, more than you becoming more proficient with a particular character. If you look at it from that prespective, dying doesn't become as rage-inducing (it even becomes fun )
>>
>>322057262
>The point of roguelikes is conquering an incredible challenge through trial and error.
Winning isn't the point of roguelikes.
>>
>>322057390
The real roguelike was the enemies you killed along the way.
>>
>>322057390
I never said winning was the point. Conquering an incredible challenge can be whatever you set for yourself, whether it's making it through the early game, or having a fun throwaway run with a crazy build.

If you're playing a game with 'bullshit' then it's your fault for playing it and not being prepared for it, the fact that you seem to thing being angry over trivial things is the only alternative to being a robot is telling of severe autism
