When will we get a mod that removes the RNG aspect of the game? I fucking love playing but a lot of the time it seems my success depends on a pair of digital dice that the random number god loaded against me.

>when will we get a mod that removes the very core of the game

The game has always been based around the RNG, and trying to manage or survive it by any little means possible.

If you dislike it, the game probably isn't for you.
>>
>>322029916
get a trainer or cheat engine if you wanna ruin the game
>>
dude stress lmao

There's such a thing as too much rng, but the devs and fans don't understand this.
>>
>>322029916

But if you remove the RNG, all that's left is the shallow JRPG combat and the narrator

might as well find some youtube vid with the narrator then.

>the game probably isn´t for you
Just saying that doesn´t make bad design choices any better. I like turn-based games (Jagged Alliance 2, Xcom, etc.) but Darkest Dungeon just isn´t nearly as tactical and the latest updates just have made the rng worse.
>>

Nah. More like multiple factors. Including team composition and skills. Items also play a role in it.

You can open the moster files in Notepad and edit all of them to do no damage ever. So it's down to critical chances being 100% and removing negative effects. Or buff the stress healing moves a ton so they're not a wasted slot without upgrading.

A non-Red Hook dev wrote a good blog on how Red Hook has caved to "Difficulty fetishists" and has kinda fucked the game up.

I agree with his assessment but the early beta was pretty easy after a point. level 1-3 or so you could get utterly fucking wrecked in a single round but when you finally got a stable of level 4-5 heroes and could farm reliably you can get a trinket/group setup that negates all but the absolute WORST RNG fuckery.

Stalling to heal/stress heal was a big thing and it's good they fixed that. Also fixing just bringing a gigantic pile of rations and refilling HP regularly was kinda broken too.

Corpses...eh, corpses suck. Regular mobs don't really do anything with them? So it just makes dealing with formations more difficult. Lame.

It´s not really difficult though. You just have to throw your face against the rng wall a couple times and you will have dealt with the low amount of bosses anyway. I hate that they made even less tactical though. It´s pretty much Vegas simulator 2015 now.

Apart from ruining my HWM and GR frontline synergy, I think corpses were a really good addition to the game.

I'm not directing this at you, but I think a lot of people just don't want to work around the new systems, and instead just get upset about it. I think the addition of corpses is great because it adds greater utility to characters with backrow-only attacks. Stun Grenades, Abyssal Artillery, Iron Swan, etc. With a good party, you can have characters focus on both front and backrow depending on what the situation demands since the enemies won't move forward, and with a corpse-clearing move, you can adjust your opponent's distances to suit the situation. I'm personally a fan of it, and I think it adds some needed depth to the game which was disappointingly easy to exploit prior to the recent patches.

>aboms and religious characters can now party together but have prejudices (that can eventually be overcome, or new ones made in the face of defeat)

>>
>>322041405
most common trinkets have a penalty to something.
>>
>>322041335
The stress damage to party isnt enough to justify how much damage he outputs to the first three rows, and if you use his rare trinket it actually heals the party by 1 stress every time he transforms back to human. Add to that the self stress heal/heal he has and there is zero stress problems with this hero or with the hero's party, and he does WAY more damage than any other hero except perhaps the plague doctor, whose damage is doled out over 3 turns instead of front loaded every turn. Add to that he has an option to back up to second rank and turn into a stun machine second only to the houndmaster, with an option to bile 2/3 rank, and hes just absurd.

Hes way overpowered and he should be nerfed a bit (preferably by making his stress mechanics meaningful).
>>

There are two fundamental problems with the battle-system as is; the fact that fights are balanced around the idea of clearing them before 4~5 turns, at which point you are punished for stalling, and the fact that you can miss.

Because the Developers want you to start out as a team of freshly rested, just used the restroom, had your sippy cup and momma kissed you on the way out soldiers and trudge through a horrible lovecraftian dungeon where your physical and mental faculties are slowly grinded away battle after battle they had to prevent you from healing out of combat.
You've got a medicine-woman who can cure bleed and poison, but she won't outside of combat, You've got a Knight who can create light, heal and cure stress but won't outside of combat.
This is all for the sake of both the Camping System and so there is a survival element where you're not always entirely prepared for every encounter.
The problem then is that you then have to implement a system that prevents players from sitting in battle to heal damage and stress.
The problem with implementing a stall system, especially of only 4 or 5 turns, it means you will be punished for doing anything that simply isn't trading as much damage as quickly as possible. Characters who need to set up marks, stuns and debuffs are now under a crunch time that doesn't always pay off, mostly because they can miss.

An Alternative to the current system is to rebalance encounters around the idea that you arrive to each one at Maximum HP, keeping your stress and debuffs from earlier fights. Possibly implementing a system where over-time in a dungeon you develop a few temporary quirks that reduce your combat effectiveness, including entering battles at -% of HP.

Missing in this game is a Cancer. It's frustrating but understandable when a 100% stressed character who is masochistic, fearful or abusive starts refusing to take orders and fucks around shitting on your strategy(more frustrating and less understandable with the Stall Mechanic) because letting your characters reach that point is part of the challenge, and it's something that you can try and prevent.
But Missing isn't something you can prevent, you simply waste a precious turn doing nothing and when you do nothing that's when you're eating another 5+ damage, getting hit by bleeds or crits.
An alternative to missing is to make it so that big all-or-nothing attacks like the Leper's swing instead range from 0~Max damage. It's bad enough that status effects and debuffs have two separate accuracy checks before they can take effect, worse yet if you rely on them for strategy.
Missing is slightly less of a problem in later stages of the game since every class will hit 100% accuracy on most of their moves when leveling them in the guild.

So what is the Deal with Hunger and Food?
I feel like I'll get checked for hunger 3 times if I have to go back through 4 or 5 hallways, but only once if I go straight through 9 unexplored hallways.

Originally that is how I assumed the game would play out.

As someone who has played a lot of Strategy RPGs and Roguelikes one of the things I most enjoy about the genre is to make a team of generic soldiers and make them the best they can possibly be, even name a few after friends.
So it was an interesting experience when this game does the exact opposite of others: Forcing you to handle their upkeep on limited funds in a highly lethal situation.
It was an interesting transformation when I started the game to when I got good, being entirely determined to keep my favorite fighters alive to becoming entirely bureaucratic and tossing away people to better my bottom line.

Hunger should really be one of those things you can keep an eye on. In most roguelikes you're forced to eat food or make food from the things that you kill and are given a vague notion of how high your satiation level is; starving, incredibly hungry, very hungry, hungry, satiated, full, very full, engorged. Cannibalism and being able to eat Eldritch meat from things you find could lend itself to a possible mechanic.
I've heard that the developers intended for there to be a Religious mechanic in place that could effect any character and not just Crusader, Vestal and Leper. Aside from maybe changing virtuous chances and pissing off people who want to use the abomination I'm not sure what they intend.

>>322058895
I've been hit by the Stall Mechanic on turn 5 while actively trying to kill remaining, yet tanky, enemies.
As long as you are punished by a Mechanic beyond your input, beyond your control then it will be a problem.

The game was always ment to fuck you over. I have been wiped multiple times. I have been playing the game since it's inception and can say that the game is actually pretty balanced now minus a few op shit here and there. However the new changes are pretty good so people can't cheese likd melee only. Corpses, heart attack, all the changes.
And the game isn't entirely RNG. Team comps and choosing which skills to take is a vital component in a successful run. I've had shit diseased party but because my comp wad able to overcome and complete that dungeon.
The game isn't all that hard just push through and your gonna lose that favorite character eventually anyway.

It really seems like the Plot of Darkest Dungeon revolves around the concept of Regret.

The Highwayman murders unknowingly murders a woman and child during a robbery, the look on his face makes it seem like its his own wife and child.
The Man-at-Arms survives a fierce battle, the child-soldier(?) he tries to save is killed when a canon ball explodes right in front of him.

Your Father regrets absolutely everything, and the game is entirely about undoing his horrible misdeeds, especially the bosses which are people or things that suffered the greatest of his influence.

The Abomination comic has a Man suffer a grueling disfigurement, but he isn't put into a situation of direct regret. These are things done by others actions and not his own. So he may be an Abomination not only in transformation, but in concept as well.

You could also argue that everyone, besides the Abomination, dies in their origin story and the game is some sort of purgatory but I think that's such a basic premise that even if it was their original intention they'll deny/stray away from it.

You should've been raising several teams of characters.
Ideally you want a team best suited for each location, maybe mix and match when its time to tackle bosses.
Once you learn how to handle the town and that its okay that you can let go failure shit characters to make way for ones that aren't suffering negative crits and negative speed quirks you should easily mop up the remaining 'apprentice' levels.

So /v/, how do you think the actual 'Darkest Dungeon' region will work? Personally, I'm hoping for something similar to the final fight with Kefka from FF6 in which all your heroes storm the dungeon at once and whenever one hero dies, he/she is replaced with another one from your party - in other words, very few survivors by the end of it.

you can turn off pretty much everything that makes the game hard. all you have to do is play safe. don't try to finish quests with 80 stress on everyone, don't even try to finish fights if someone gets afflicted, just pull back. if you've got someone on deaths door, pull back. i've retreated and abandoned quests when i've got bosses down to 10% hp just because i know its better to try again than to risk way more time invested in a hero.

>>
>>322069501
I don't get this complaint.
A corpse can just as easily keep an enemy in a place for being hit as be destroyed and move him out of the way of being hit.
>>
>>322069724

Bingo. And like I said the idea behind pushing or pulling a creature can really influence the battle.

Like know how frustrating it is when you get pushed or pulled? It's 10 times harder on the enemies if you fuck up their rotation
>>
>>322039958
I think they nerfed the pot recently, or st least since before the corpse update. I remember when I started playing this game, the pot had 15hp but it had ridiculous protection or something and you could only do like 2 damage a turn to it. I recently went through the first jag again and she scooped my my Uber buffed bounty hunter. I decided I needed him, so I had my highwayman attack it and he one-shot the pot with a crit.
>>
>>322069603
if you're fucked by a single retreat failing you've already played too riskily. the risk of losing a hero isn't worth the reward you get from completing quests. if you like having to retrain legends be my guest but i don't.
>>
>>322069615
No. Just wait the month until it comes out and buy it.
>>
>>322037134
problem is, they nerfed a ton of characters with the targeting/corpse changes just to validate shitty abilities rather than balancing them. Thats all corpses are in the end, a means to give shitty back row abilities validity in existing by the mere fact that better attacks are prevented from hitting via corpses. Rather than adressing the poor balance they implemented a bewildering mechanic that only the most direhard of reddit autist endorsed at its outset. I mean corpses dodging or being able to be missed at all? are you fucking real
>>
Do people really think corpses make the game harder? I think it's great when I kill a front liner and their back liners can still be targeted by mine instead of moving forward (unless I choose to move them by clearing corpses).
>>
>>322070351
i'm not sure why you have a problem with combat being more varied by corpses making some abilities more useful than they were before. making abilities relevant through corpses IS balancing.

The game does have way too much RNG.
When I get into a fight I don't think ''hmm, I'll just use this strategy to deal with that and then I will hurr durr durr''. What I am thinking is ''fuck, the enemy got the first turn. If this guy hits my party member then the entire party is going to freak out and die, if he misses then I HOPE I will get lucky and kill this guy before his turn comes''.
I don't like it at all. Most of the skills are completely useless. One skill gives a tiny buff like some shit that will make your character slightly better at dodging and the other skill will do massive damage to the enemy and will let me kill a guy before his turn comes.
Not even Dota is this bad. People whine about how Dota is nothing but RNG, but like every time you go into Dota you have to think ''oh gee I HOPE the enemy skills don't trigger, duuuude, if it triggers I am dead''. In Doto you don't have any useless skills that do nothing, it's not like you have a Laguna Blade that does 1000 damage and a skill that will reduce the damage you take by 10% at the cost of you skipping your round.
>>
>>322073921
But who gets the first turn is based off speed (unless you get surprised), anon. Your post screams "I don't know the mechanics of this game". It's interesting you make a parallel with dota, because the same thing happens in mobas at really low levels: people who don't know how to play the game crying that everything is bullshit just because they have no idea how it really works.
>>
>>322073921
if your success depends entirely upon a single roll then you need to reconsider the decisions you are making in the game that lead up to that point.
>>
>>322074248
The game mechanics are not explained in any way. The game says that if my torch is lit I will surprise enemies, which is clearly false. It's not like I have much chance to learn the game mechanics when I enter a fight and get wiped out by two critical hits or at least crippled so badly I can't finish the dungeon.
>>
>>322074248
The speed mechanic goes off a type of d8 roll formula though I think. So unless your unit has god tier speed, which even then doesn't always guarantee going first, it is way up to chance in terms of turn order. I've had 8-10 speed units get beat out by 0 speed units, and it baffles me everytime.
>>
>>322074878
you have a higher chance to get surprises if you keep your torch at the highest two levels. nothing is guaranteed. sometimes you just have to back off and give up on a quest too.
try turning off some of the harder options like corpses or full enemy crit scaling until you understand the game mechanics better.

Why do you need mods like that? That wasn't the tabletop experience the devs wanted to give you. And this is coming from someone who browsed game development subs for 7 years.
>>
>>322075184
turn order is rolled at the beginning of every turn, so if you increase your speed on the same turn, it won't affect that turns order. i don't think i've ever seen a 0 speed enemy go before a 10 speed hero when thats their speed as the turn starts.
>>
>>322052726
He probably wants to but RNG sort of circumvents that, bro.
>>
>>322076564
The game has a reverse difficulty curve, it's hardest at the beginning. Tough out the first 5 or 6 weeks and you'll be rolling in resources and leveled adventurers. This is not a hard game by any means, it's technically impossible to get a game over.
>>
>>322076564
if you think that the existence of an rng makes a game impossible to get good at, you are objectively incorrect. how do you think there are pro poker players?
