All you need for a decent desktop is an i5 3XXX tier or higher and a motherboard that's either ASRock or gigabyte that will accept said i5.
You should only ever replace GPU, add more ram or replace/add HDD's.
If you're a faggot I guess you can also add LED's.

Why would you buy the more expensive Z170 board with a locked CPU? The only reason to get a Z-Series over the H-series is to take advantage of the overclocking abilities of the chipset.

If you play a game that is heavily reliant on your CPU, then you could consider overclocking.
For example, guild wars 2 is horribly optimized and will rape most processors that arent overclocked.

There's nothing wrong with an i5. i7s are overkill for what most people would use them for and AMD hasn't made a worthwhile CPU in years.

But you need to understand the relationship between your BCLK speed and your RAM speed because if you just turn up the BCLK you'll also be overclocking the RAM and if you fail to adjust the multiplier down on your RAM appropriately you'll blow it up. Also, the heat dissipation is much worse on the 6500 chips so be sure to pair it with something decent. Good luck, hope nothing goes wrong.
