I'm out of the loop in games. Any new flying games for star wars or something?

And what has been good in the last 5 years or so? I used to play Wing Commander, X-Wing, Tie Fighter etc so I'm really lost on what's been happening.

How do people even do nowadays with just consoles and no more cockpit-esque joystick+keyboard?

Is there really no stuff like "lock in power to rear shields and admnister if you can manage to lose shooting etc" no more? I get it that easy manuevering without administring stuff and user-friendliness is a plus and sells more but that shit used to be great.
>>
I believe the rogue squadron games were the last Star Wars flight games, but those were fairly casual as I recall.
>>
>>322015493
yeah i remember those and not buying because they seemed like starfox or something
>>
>>322015229
Rogue squadron was actually really fun on n64. Emulate it at 60 fps and it'd be really fun
>>
The space combat game in TOR is good. Not incredible, but does have you managing your shields/engines/weapons and there are a nice variety of different ships.

Unfortunately it's in TOR and when I last checked barely anyone was playing it, in the server I was in anyway.
>>
>>322015815
it looked really simple.

I've played that Elite Dangerous on a friend's Oculus and that shit made me wanna go back to playing these but with more variety than Elite
>>
>>322015998
> but does have you managing your shields/engines/weapons
> nice variety of different ships.
that's more what I'm into, but what's TOR? (i'm seriously out of the loop)
>>
>>322016267
The Old Republic, Bioware's colossal disaster of an MMO.

You don't need to do any of the traditional MMO shit to play the space combat though.
>>
>>322016461
>Bioware's colossal disaster of an MMO
woof, im gonna check it out but MMOs is one of the things that made me stop gaming
>>
Just wait. They will milk the starwars license.
>>
>>322016617
pretty sure any new star wars game will be even more simplified than even the most casual ones. WE DISNEY NOW
>>
>>322016597
It might be worth it if there's a sever in your region with an active player base for it.

It's free anyway, so it will only waste your time.
>>
>>322016617
I don't think Disney or EA give a shit about hardcore players. They probably still think Battlefront is the best SW themed game ever made.
>>
Imagine a freelancer style starwars game with nice dogfighting mechanics
>>
>>322016826
They had it after episode 1 too: you had an action rpg-ish game, a racing game, a flight "sim".
It cant see EA stop after releasing just one game especially after seeing how disney went all in with toys, scale kits and everything else involving the actual x-wing/tie fighter spacecrafts.
>>
>>322015229
>Is there really no stuff like "lock in power to rear shields and admnister if you can manage to lose shooting etc" no more?
Elite Dangerous
>>
>>322016617
>>322016752
>>322016826

>>
>>322017610
>new markets and girls will bring more money for better games, they said
>>
>>322017465
i played on a friend's oculus (brilliant feeling) but i didnt know it had any variety (dogfighting, different ships and styles). Thought it was more like No Man Sky
>>
>>322015998
>>322016461
Unless they have made some major overhauls since I quit, the space combat in those was nothing more than an on-the-rails shooter more akin to star fox than an actual flight sim. The only "management" involved was replacing your +2 shields with a +3 shields/weapons upgrades until you hit the top tier, and could just cakewalk every level which occurred disappointingly early.
>>
>>322018308
Yeah, that's the old thing. There's something called Starfighter now which is a multiplayer dogfighting game.
>>
>>322016797
that'll be the harder part

they really simplify shit they shouldnt and complicate in others
>>
>>322017897
not sure what you mean as far as variety in dogfighting, but there are different ships that are best suited for different playstyles
you've got trading, bounty hunting, pirating, exploring, smuggling, mining
and Elite Dangerous: Horizons just came out, which adds (will add?) landing on planets, crafting, crews, etc

it's a work in progress, but probably one of your best options out right now
>>
>>322018647
yeah im researching now and it really seems to be the best choice out there now
>>
>>322018576
If they just released it as a standalone it would be excellent.

I want to get back into playing it right now, but the idea of dealing with all the hassle that goes with it makes it seem like a chore.
>>
>>322017610
from the way even the new movie shows xwing fights the era of cool dogfighting is gone

(goddamn that horrible Poe scene killing 15 things in a row in the distance with no impact, no cool manuevers etc - just barely a dot in the screen that is a mario with a star controled by a mouse or touchpad or something)
>>
>>322019074
>the idea of dealing with all the hassle that goes with it makes it seem like a chore.
yeah that really dampers the excitement
>>
>>322019237
Rey's millenium falcon sequence was straight up 4yos playing with toys in how it manuevered and perfectly turned corners and went perfectly through tight shit.

It felt like the CGI's computer was moving them around just making sure there was no clipping
>>
>>322015493

The PS2 had Starfighter and Jedi Starfighter

>>322015556

starfox was on rails, in rogue Squadron you could actually go where you wanted
>>
>>322017610
>the blast doors just open for them
>>
>>322020486
Rey is a character written by 4 year olds, so it makes sense.
>>
>>322022249
>starfox was on rails, in rogue Squadron you could actually go where you wanted
i know but the controls are very alike, it feels no different from controling a 3rd person character except he floats instead of run and cover
>>
>>322022634
but there was a lot of loud brrrruush engine noises and the camera shakes in impossible areas like it's a perfect-flight drone (so there's shitload of busy stuff on the blurry foreground) so it's ok
>>
>>322022791

That's basically how aircraft work in the Star Wars universe
>>
>>322022481
it's a tiny movie where it's ok for the kids to throw shit on the screen and press it occasionally
>>
>>322020486

That sequence would have made sense in any small ship

the Falcon is just huge and fast, it's not supposed to outmaneuver a fucking TIE

Fucking abrams
>>
>>322023323
you havent played tie fighter, xwing alliance etc?
>>
>>322023561
Or even Starfighter.
>>
>>322023492
even in a small ship it needs to be more slowed down to by ducts and pillars etc. We need to believe it's humanly possible to digest and react (and for us to understand as well what's happening)

the scene is ultimately "rey is badass with the most badass ship that is not junk, you must desire to be her little girls" which doesnt even work (who thought "i wanna be 6yo anakin, he's the coolest and destroyed that big ship")
>>
>>322023858

Well Rey is the ultimate Mary Sue character so it's not surprising that she can sit on the Falcon's cockpit and automatically become the best pilot in the galaxy, just like she can suddenly unleash her inner Force abilities and overpower a wannabe Sith

Of course the media and msot of the audience will eat it up as >muh strong female character
>>
>>322015229
Did you play Freespace 2? Best space fighting sim.
It's a bit old, but with some mods it's still looking rather good.
You can even get Freespace 1 campaign in mods, but it's not as good as the second one.
>>
X3 is fantastic if you like sandbox gameplay rather than mission-based dogfighting.
>>
>>322024217
i did, i loved it. I assume nowadays it must be a bit rough and old. I remember it coming out around the time of the last Wing Commander (i think 5?) and it was really fun

do mods do that much of a good work to be updated enough?

>>322024368
i like both but i do enjoy the mission-based because it forces you to learn other gameplay styles (capture items, use other ships that work differently etc)
>>
>>322024189
yeah it's deppressing how much of a non-character she ultimately is and how that's the standard. The 12parsec bit was just salesman bullshit but now it's "the most badass ship in the galaxy piloted by badass Rey", it's a strange way to relate to fictional characters.

at least the force bit could be "ok she accepted her future and contextualized her past and found her force and strength, she's a Skywalker and Kylo made her be abandoned" but it wasnt anything like that
>>
>>322024552
> do mods do that much of a good work to be updated enough?
I replayed it more than a year ago so my memory is a bit foggy, but I remember the mods improved the graphics significantly.

Finished it though.
>>
>>322025740
i'm hoping he's like that story where Luke infiltrates turns to the dark side to know it better and have power to defeat it (but loses himself in it)

if Rey is still the hero and not become some ultimate badass villain (the only way she works) it'll be full shit

those seem sweet but not many buttons on the base (those can be helpful and feel awesome if mapped right in these games)

Well, there is a Star Wars mod for Freelancer.
>>
>>322027628
https://youtu.be/mXRGkbmFT_0

IL2 1946 is like 10bux and well worth it, has hundreds of planes and lots of mods to boot.

DCS is a f2p game where you have to buy planes. Best pack to get is Flaming Cliffs 3, comes with F15C, Mig29, SU27, SU33, SU25T, and A-10A. Most of the pvp is done with the Flaming Cliffs jets, the Su25T is great for A2G as well.

I haven't tried falcon 4 bms, but I heard good things.

Rise of Flight is a WW1 era sim, has the same dlc deal as DCS.
>>
>>322028895
I second 1946.
It's the best starter sim and it runs great on older hardware. DCS is more detailed but not as fun
>>
>>322024552
>i did, i loved it. I assume nowadays it must be a bit rough and old. I remember it coming out around the time of the last Wing Commander (i think 5?) and it was really fun

do mods do that much of a good work to be updated enough?

Do you know about the Freespace Source Code Project? They've made a lot of updates to the graphics and added more features for modders to use, which has made it possible to make even better campaigns. There was even a huge Wing Commander mod released a while back. Freespace 2 is definitely worth revisiting if you never delved into the fan-made campaigns.
>>
>>322029158
It's even good on consoles.
>>
>>322029384
Console IL2 can't even be compared to 1946.

holy shit that IL2 bomb run looks fun, comfy but needing to stay sharp just the right amount

>>322029384
Are you talking about Birds of Prey? It's not the same game but it was a decent console pseudo-sim.
>>
>>322026062
I've tried both and found the Logitech to be more comfortable to use. The problem is that you'll probably have to replace it in a few years, because eventually it'll start pulling to the right all the time with no way to fix it.

>>
I used to play x-wing vs tie figher with this

it was so good

>>
I'm not too sure how many games still use it, the FF centering spring still feels pretty good. I think most flight sims have the option.
>>
>>322031412

>>
>>322031412
So much this. I'm still mad at MS for dropping support with the release of XP. I got really good at feeling the edge of a stall in IL2: FB and was really good in a tight furball.
>>
>>322031412
had the same one.

i would think it was just a matter of installing the same old driver or anything really. It seems like such a easy concept for a modern pc to just take it in
>>
>>322031849
you had to plug it in the MIDI port (barely any sound card has it nowadays) AND PS2 (by using a passthrough through the keyboard) (maybe even serial but maybe I remember wrong)
I doubt it'd work at all on anything current.

Good thing I still got my old win98 around with the driver and all, also a voodoo2
>>
>>322032037
>Good thing I still got my old win98 around with the driver and all, also a voodoo2
Wouldn't it be easier just to run through dosbox and emulate the Voodoo? I still keep my CRT around for legacy vidya reasons, but I couldn't go back to 5min booting times and fucking around with CPU clockspeeds everytime my PC was too fast for it.
