Deus Ex was pretty good in this regard because the whole transhumanism thing was mostly a backdrop to the conspiracy stuff. John Wick was a much more generic kind of story/setting, like the anon said. Just an ex mob hitman getting revenge and fighting a bunch of guys like has been done a million times before.
Dredd has much more distinctive setting and the main characters were interesting, you had the subplot of the rookie and whether she would step up and whether Dredd would come to approve of her. Plus it had the whole Die Hard suspense element of being stuck in a giant building with limited resources/communication. Just a much more memorable movie all around.
John Wick wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. Dredd was great.
