People find it dull because it is dull. It took everything games like Baldur's Gate 2 did, then simplified it, toned it down or just down right downgraded it. This combined with really fucking bad writing is why the games just so boring and mediocre.
It's sad. This game which was made recently cannot out do a game made almost 20 years ago. It probably had a bigger team and larger budget working on it too.
