Okay so I killed the blood-starved beast in Old Yharnam and got a chalice, which I'm not sure what to do with. I opened up a dungeon with it but do I need to complete that now? I thought I had to beat the Cathedral Ward boss.

Anyway so I went back to the Cathedral Ward, and there was this new door open to an elevator to a place with a radiant hunter badge and another locked door, but then I dropped down down down and got killed by some Hellknight-looking fucker throwing fireballs. Is the door he was guarding locked? Is that the way I'm supposed to go?

I went up the Cathedral boss anyway, any tips for her? I got her down to 1/3 health on the first try but it feels like my saw spear wasn't doing enough damage, is there a good place to get double shards for upgrading it? Also, does this game have level scaling? It feels like the townspeople in the new area I found were tougher than the ones in the city center. Oh, and should I use Ludwig's blade or rifle since I unlocked them?

I'm enjoying this game a lot but there's so many different routes it's kind of dizzying.

>Is the door he was guarding locked? Is that the way I'm supposed to go?
no and yes
>>321994009
>I went up the Cathedral boss anyway, any tips for her? I got her down to 1/3 health on the first try but it feels like my saw spear wasn't doing enough damage, is there a good place to get double shards for upgrading it?
use fire paper and try going to the left area where that Cathedral boss was, leads you to an area with plenty of them
>>
>>321994401

So I should go down past the door before fighting the boss? Or can I come back later?
>>
>>321994009
I'm at this point but I haven't found the boss, instead I got killed by one of those bastards with the Sack on their backs(Stalkers?) and got dragged into a area with powerful enemies.
What do?
>>
>>321996640
Snatchers
you can continue in the area to kill Paarl or use lantern to go back and save yarghul for later
>>
>>321994009
Take a right at the grand cathedral and you can head into hemwick, you will fin some double bloodstone shards here to upgrade your weapon.
>>
>>321995616
If you bought the item to unlock cathedral ward, then all you will find is some shit armor, a fire gem, and a short cut in cathedral ward if you haven't already unlocked it.
>>
>>321994009
>I opened up a dungeon with it but do I need to complete that now?

They're completely optional and cut off from the rest of the game; do them if you feel like it

>I went up the Cathedral boss anyway, any tips for her?

Fire paper, Beast Blood Pellets, remember numbing mist for when she heals. Stick to her ass

>is there a good place to get double shards for upgrading it?

You can go to Hemwick just left (facing the door from the stairs) to Amelia which is abundant in them, this is an optional area and currently you are a good level to do it

>it feels like my saw spear wasn't doing enough damage

It should be absolutely fine, you'll get better - speedrunners do Amelia without an upgraded weapon

>Also, does this game have level scaling?

No, but some of the same mobs in later areas do more damage and have more health

Man I tried using those fucking blood cocktails on the blood starved beast but it just seems to ignore it. Am I being retarded or is it?
>>
>>321997867
Just dodge left on BSB, everything will miss you
>>
>>321998258
Should I even bother with the cocktails then?
>>
>>321998394
The cocktails will miss 80% of the time; they'll just go over his head. The fire paper Alfred gave you will be much more useful.
>>
>>321998394
Nah seriously just walk right up to his face and when he swings dodge forward and to the left(for some combo attack may need to dodge twice in a row) this will put you right behind him and you can get a few good whacks in.
If you need poison res for phase three get Gasgoine's gear
If you do want to use cocktails then they should be working so I don't know what to tel you there
>>
>>321998812
>>321998816
Aight I'll try that.
I've already wasted my fire paper trying to kill it though, any way I can get more?
>>
>>321998906
I think you can buy it with insight, but that may be after you beat BSB, what weapon are you using?
>>
>>321999170
Alright, I'll check.
Saw Cleaver +3
>>
>>321998906
Fire paper can be purchased from the messengers in the hunters dream and the insight shop (also in the hunters dream). You might have to unlock it but I recall being able to purchase it relatively early in the game.

Fire paper is a luxery and not needed to win the boss fight. Just summon someone with your beckoning Bell to help you out. You can also summon Alfred in the area right before the boss. Walk up to the area that's glowing red and press X (consumes 1 insight).
>>
>>321999256
You're using it untricked right? for that sweet serration bonus.
>>
>>321997867
>>321998394
>>321998906

If you're really fucked by BSB I used the flamesprayer on it and won pretty easily.
>>
>>321999334
l-lol?
>>
>>321999434
Frankly no, I'm using it tricked, love that extra distance. Should I change?
>>321999265
Cheers, I'll try that now.
>>321999438
What the fug is flamesprayer
>>
>>321999334
oh god tell me this is an edit
>>
>>321999434
This. Keep the saw cleaver untransformed (small version). You'll do a little more damage and your attacks will be quicker.
>>
>>321999695
Untransformed get a 20% damage buff against beasts, really good for the first half of the game
>>
>>321999779
>>321999946
I hear you, I'll try that as well. Thanks

It's an item you can get from the gilbert guy in the window next to the central yharnam lamp, after you get to the cathedral ward for the first time but only until you beat vicar amelia. It's basically a little fire-spewing hand weapon. It eats up bullets as you hold it down but it doesn't use stamina or anything but is a nice burny close-range way to finish up an attack or block off a choke point. It's good to use on the blood-starved beast when he's doing that screamy phase shift animation because he sits there and the damage builds.
>>
Well shit. Summoned Alfred, untricked my weapon and dodged left and the fight was a piece of cake. Thanks for the tips guys

>>
>>321994009
Chalice Dungeons are the worst content in any of the Souls games. Honestly, just look up a guide for the dungeons with bosses/loot you want to get or kill.

They're extremely boring content that literally rehashes over and over again. Every floor looks exactly the same and you rarely find anything of value inside of them.
>>
>>321997867
Just beat him for the first time, I found it easiest when I basically dodged straight towards him and ended up behind him, then went for an R2 on his back. I parried him once as well before the last swipe in the move where he goes for about 5 hits, and got a front stab in. Took me about 8 tries with 3 different methods and that was the only method that worked for me.
>>
>>322003016
I only focus on my strength and skill and a little vitality
>>322003016
thanks
>>
>>322003686
Sometimes the best methods for killing bosses is to not lock onto them. Orphan of Kos is a prime example. Locking onto him only makes the fight harder.
>>
>>322003827
I didn't lock on except for the part where I parried him. Found out locking on was not helpful against Celestial beast.
>>
>>321997842
Your shit is out of order.
>>
>>322004159
It's the order I personally do it in. I can't account for everyone, I'm afraid.
>>
>>322004315
How do you even do amy that early? I didn't think you could get there before Rom.
>>
>>322004627
Patches is in a house in the Forbidden Woods.
>>
>>322004627
entering the woods, or sometimes Hemwick, will trigger Patches giving you the tonsil stone.
>>
>>322004627
You ever get the Tonsil Stone? After you do, let the Amygdala to the right of the Grand Cathedral pick you up, it teleports you to the first floor of the Lecture Hall.
>>
>>322003051
well then you can fuck off.
Enjoy being a poor fag
>>
>>322004627
You can get her as the 4th boss in the game.
>Gascoigne mandatory to reach Cathedral Ward.
>Either Blood Starved or Cleric to access Amelia.
>Kill Amelia to get password for forbidden woods.
>Get tonsil stone in forbidden woods and use it to reach Nightmare Frontier/Amygdala.

And you can solo it pretty easy really early if you've got Simon's bow.

No, it just takes you back to cathedral Ward, nice little área though

Ludwigs blade might be good for now, but the DLC weapons (if you bought it) are superior in almost everyway, also, no, there's really no way to farm double shards in the beginning

I really dont get all the love for the spear, tricked moveset is dogshit, axe is better in almost everyway except when facing beasts

>finally starting to get the timing on the stake driver tricked strong attack
The blood starved beast was giving me hells of trouble but now that I'm getting this down I seriously just smacked her shit.

Like wow, I'm pretty sure a perfect hit from this thing does more damage than a visceral attack. Though I went into this game largely blind and have discovered: a lot of people don't care for the stake driver.

Also, I actually restarted this because when I first started playing I was wandering around and didn't listen to warnings and some cthulu-ish fucker started sapping all my insight, and that made me pissed. Is there an easy way to thrash those dudes?
>>
>>322010305
Hah no brainsuckers are one of the most bullshit enemies in game. All you can do is thrust attack them till dead don't try anything else

Is it true a lot of people have trouble with these assholes?

I've actually been smashing them into the earth with the Kirkhammer then following up with the R2 swing to smack them away. Then, while they're...uh, roaring? I hit them in the back to stagger and finish them.

Makes short work of them as long as you're not afraid to potentially get hit in the first charge/you get the timing right.
>>
>>322010668
just use kirk sword and thrust kill em in two hits
>>
>>322011028
My kirk isn't so powerful. I try not to feel too overpowered and thus don't upgrade incredibly often.
>>
>>322010668
theyre also ridiculously easy to parry.
>>
>>322011125

>>

I actually can only reliably parry one or two of its moves. A lot of the others I don't seem to know the timing.
>>
When I went into nightmare frontier a sinister chime maiden was summoned almost straight away, but I was got my shit kicked in by those boulder tossing assholes so I left before killing her. >tfw finished this game last night

DLC kind of felt like a double edged sword, the bosses were fucking great but the final 2 bosses felt like a joke afterwards.
>>
>>322011914
I had found one of them earlier near the fancy graveyard in front of the grand cathedral, but he didn't have a large tentacle and space magic (which is why the stronger variant caught me off guard), so I'm guessing if the animation ever looks similar to that guy, I shoot him in the face?

Bell Maidens count only for the area they're in, she'll be there when you get back, but kill her once and she won't respawn.

Just for that area. If you go back to that area she'll start ringing again. If you die/use a lamp, she'll respawn.

If you summon co-op help in non-nightmare areas a bell ringer will show up there as well.

Gehrman can be pretty rough if you went through the game without parrying much. MP is a pushover, though.

People have issue with her because if you don't know what you're doing and playing too cautiously, she'll start healing. And at a low level it can be very hard to out dps her healing.

She's easy though, just fire paper up and wack the hand holding the amulet
