How do you like your graphics?
Realistic? Cartoon?
>>
I'd rather have cartoony or stylized art style over realism
>>

>>
Stylized with good art direction because realism will look awful in a few years
>>
Realistic ones are doomed to look like ass a few years later. Stylization is the only way to get timeless visuals.

Stay out
>>
Realistic games age like milk and tend to have forgettable designs. I prefer stylized.
>>
I like my videogame styles varied.
>>
I like my graphics to match the feel of the game.
>>
Stylized.
The best portions of all CGI that's been released in the west is stuff that has a stylized look that plays down the depressing and failed attempt to look realistic.

To be honest, I've found that realism is nothing more then boring cynical stylization and is oft a pissing contest for graphics shillers.

Realism is often the excuse devs use when they are too incompetent to come up with original designs. Western character designers a shit.
>>
>>321975652

I like my graphics Kamitani.

Nothing else compares.
>>
I think style and quality art has to exist above all else. Witcher 3 looks beautiful while Skyrim is hideous
>>
>>321976092
You don't think realism suits a series like Ace Combat or Resident Evil or whatever?

I think something like Guilty Gear because it looks fucking great
Needs to pop out and Still be able to have sexy scenes

Oldschool JRPG style in modern graffics

Shame it's all animu or boyband art for JRPGs now.

There is a reason why the 2D games of the 90's aged so much better than the "realistic" 3D games of the 90's. Simple truth is that realism doesn't age well. Good art design is timeless. Realism is only impressive in relation to other games and current tech. SOTN is probably the prettiest game ever made. Its art style is timeless. It looks just as good today as it did in '97.
>>
>>321976440
Another example is Disgaea vs Hyper Dimensional Neptunia. Disgaea is detailed and every character is unique and memorable. HDM is bug eyed moetrash

Also, there are many devs that recognize this fact so they try to either emulate 2D or go for a unique style that stands out from the rest. Truth is that today, nobody remembers how Crysis 2 or Battlefield 3 looks like. If I showed a picture, you'd probably confuse the two.

>How do you like your graphics?
>Realistic? Cartoon?

Depends what it is

Mario Bros shouldn't be realistic

gritty action games with serious story telling probably shouldn't use big cartoony colorful characters

I prefer whatever's appropriate
>>
>>321976598
LO looks nothing like any old school JRPG in modern graphics, and in fact big budget JRPGs is how JRPGs looked back in the day now just with better graphics

For some reason, realistic games always look forgettable. Character designs are boring and setting is boring.

I cant wait from Gravity Rush 2
>>
Anything with realism shoved into your face can get thrown in the garbage.
>>
I really don't care. All of those games are visually cool in some way. They're all pretty cool games too, except FFXIII.

I think if I had to pick one that impressed me the most though, it would be Xrd. Because it emulates 2D in a way that no other 3D game has managed to accomplish, while keeping in enough 3D flairs to really enhance the presentation. It still consistently impresses me to look at despite playing quite a bit of it already.

>>
>>321975652
It depends on the art-style and characters.

I can't see a cel-shaded Nathan Drake, but at the same time, the Sonic world with semi-realistic art style looked awful.
>>
>>321977480
>>321977617
Gorgeous.

The only thing I dislike about Logend of Mana's graphics is the main character sprite (just the male one).
>>
>>321976246
Yeah, but...let's be honest here bruh.
The girl in your pick isn't even close to original.

>>321976467
I actually do. It works well, but it has a certain quasi realistic look that works really well for it's universe.
It takes cues from reality and adds enough fantasy to make it work well.
Take a look at the silent hill series.
It looks like it takes full advantage of the creepy uncanny valley effect that CGI can have when designing it's characters.
It's a beautiful use of the medium to get an effect.Take a look at the picture of Eileen what's her face from Silent Hill 4.
It has a "realistic" thing going but it also takes full advantage of it and makes her look normal but...OFF in a way that makes us wonder if she's okay.
Most people who do realism end up with boring attempts at one too one copies of what's there or are overly flattering representations of reality without the least bit of self awareness.
I never get the feeling that people who try for realistic representations of humanity like or even take their time to look at people.

I want a good game, that being said it's usually more cartoon/stylized because it isn't based in realism, so the character doesn't have to move/fight like that.
>>
I want coherent artstyle.

The reason Cartoon typically ages better is because it's consistent and refreshing to look at. It is aesthetically appealing and holds age simply because it wasn't JUST about pixel density, triangle counts, and shading.
>>
>>321978313

The fact she has a plaid skirt makes her pretty unique honestly.
>>
>>321977601
Was fun but had problems
Mostly motion control problems
>>
>>321978575

Controls where fine, gyro for quick aiming is better than stick. Main problem was the lackluster combat.

>>321978365

>>

semi-realistic with the un-tarnished beauty of clean cartoony looks
>>
Realistic but colorful
Naughty Dog, Ninja Theory
>>
I feel like technology is not at the point where realism would look sleeker then cartoony. It's obviously getting better, but for now cartoony/semi-cartoony, or very stylized realism. In 10 years I'll probably say realistic.
>>
>>321979161
It's a shame we won't see a Jak-like ND game on modern hardware. ND is too "mature" for those games now.
>>
Non-photorealistic is often cheaper and ages better.
Photorealistic is expensive and looks terrible in a few years.

I think you need more artistic talent to make NPR work however.

The aesthetics of both are entirely subjective, different people will have different opinions about them. A game tending to one side or the other won't automatically make that game look better either, the artist is always more important.

>>321979232
I disagree. The closer we reach realism, the more visible will the imperfections of the fake be. The harder the devs try to sell you a realistic face, the harder will you be on the imperfections that appear. Meaning that uncanny valley is real and that we will never reach a point where realism in games is realism. And if we ever reach a point like that, the costs of developing such a game would be so massive that the benefits would be barely worth the budget.

If stylized equals anime, I'd go with realistic. Realistic graphics may look bad in a few years, but anime looks like shit from day one.

Anime isn't a style. It's a type of animation.
