When you have a userbase who will literally buy last gens hardware if call it a current gen console/handheld it is really hard to deviate from this model due to the profit margin.
Nintendos next console is already confirmed to be running xbox one tier levels of hardware anyway.

Well it's true nothing's been confirmed, but yeah let's be honest here. I mean, I've had a Wii and Wii U since day one and it's blatantly obvious this is how Nintendo runs their shit now.

Nintendo seems to be obsessed with hardware profit, despite them having a billion first party tiles that print money.
No one wants to spend bank on an underpowered machine.
Really they should just sell at cost and profit off the software.
Also actually be nice to 3rd parties, agree not to release Nintendo games in the immediate window of certain 3rd party titles.
But they won't, they have too fat of a head.
