Suikoden I-III are an ongoing trilogy and should be played in order. They are really a continuation of the same story (cut tragically short after the creator left on Suikoden III).

The story stands alone just fine, but it is a sequel taking place in the same world. A lot of 1's characters show up in 2, more if you transfer your save file. Definitely worth playing them in order.
I like 3 a lot, but many people don't. It's definitely a little different, and flawed, but it has some cool ideas. You get to see the story unfold from three different perspectives, which leads to a lot of repetition early on, but it's a neat approach. Battle system is a little different. Really neat cast, though.
