Sonic Geneisis Marble zone
Has a great song and is one of the most unique levels artistic wise.
The moving blocks in lava are annoying as hell, but I've always thought this level looked and sounded very atmospheric for a 16 bit game.

I'll agree with you on 2, which falls apart after Mystic Cave.
Marble isn't a terribly bad level though. It's not great either, but it's not even the low water mark of S1 (man, fuck Labyrinth, it's not even fun).
Sky Fortress Zone is the worst Sonic level in terms of not just music but also everything.
Just an exercise in frustration and where my game overs always began.

Sonic 3 is the worst of the 3. It just ruins so much of the pure simplicity of Sonic 1 and 2 with needless gimmicks and bad level design. The songs are worse too, since they're trying to do more than the Genesis sound chip can handle.
