Shame Persona games biggest flaws are the main game itself. It'd be great if it was just a game of only the daytime segments with stat building, a 3d environment, inventory, and multiple questlines/social links.

So I tried playing this. I don't normally go for JRPGs but thought it was great in the beginning. Good music, story, great atmosphere. I even liked the social sim aspects. The actual gameplay was just utter shit, though. Nothing but walking down corridors and generic, tedious turn-based battles. Oh, and I kind of mismanaged my time so now I have to go back a week. I want to play the game but how do you guys deal with the gameplay? Do the earlier games or mainline SMT games have superior gameplay?

If you're not into turn stuff all i can suggest you from the MegaTen saga are the Raidou games since they're more Action RPG than JRPG.

Early Persona has much worse gameplay. SMT and most of its other spinoffs have much better gameplay.

The mainline games (Persona is really only sideline in not-japan, because the "Shin Megami Tensei" was added in the localization) are much more focused on the gameplay aspect than Persona is. Stuff like fusing demons on the spot instead of having to run back outside definitely improves it, and the dungeons are always more interesting, along with slight moral choice stuff that leads into usually 3+ endings.
