All of your specials cancel into each other and have godlike framedata but your normals are kind of slow. Elk Hunt and Bull Bash are your go-to moves for getting something going and fucking your enemy on wakeup. Use 6P to anti-air. Try to practice a combo that starts with 6P. I believe you can do 6P>5S>5HS>6HS>Hawk Baker>Whatever. Try to end your combos with Beak Driver or Bull Bash so you can eat because those have good frame advantage and push you away from your enemy.

There isn't a quick getup. When Potemkin does slidehead (the move where he falls over), it causes an unblockable extra-long knockdown if you're standing on the ground.
I don't know if you were doing it on purpose but your zoning was pretty good. Have you players Street Fighter? It felt like I was playing a Street Fighter player. Keep in mind that Axl has a pretty good DP and a gimmicky counter move that you can use when you're cornered.

Yeah I play Guile in Street Fighter, and I mostly play Axl like my Guile. I just don't know what to do when a good player gets in my face. I need to spend more time in practice learning how to DP under pressure, because I want to and I know it's my best counter, but I'm just really bad at pulling it off.
Also I'm pretty sure mashing DP on wakeup doesn't work in this game. I've read some forum posts about it and I just gotta practice on the training dummy to get the timing.

DP on wakeup works in this game but you gotta time it, mashing it out doesn't usually work. Axl is strong as a zoning character but he's pretty technical, all his normals reach super far but they each cover a very specific angle of approach. His options when someone's in his face are limited as well, that's his weakness. He's a lot like Dhalsim.
You might want to try Faust, who's the game's best zoner, or May, who's a charge character with a projectile & strong normals that can play a zoning game as well. Both of them should be a bit easier than Axl.
