I genuinely enjoyed firefall at one point. It had a very well made map, in the sense that it was just big enough to be fun, but just small enough so most of the population could make it in time for a tornado or a chosen attack. All they needed to do was add more events. More variables like the melding wall moving backwards and forwards. The style was great, the gameplay good enough, the story acceptable. It was literally good. But then they just fucked it up.

It was the first half of Beta, which was Closed and about 1/4 of Open. It had literally everything you had or wanted to do. Chosen assaults, mining, races, mining, PVP, mining, mining, exploration, mining, actually interesting mining locations, tornadoes, that one instance-wide boss guy you got from using a pulsar or whatever in a melding tornado, did I mention mining?
Anyway, then the big crafting change marked the downfall of everything.

It's always business decisions meddling with the original creative vision and intent. In the case of this game, it was them suddenly deciding they wanted a piece of the esports pie too so they abandoned the stuff people actually wanted and a lot of the MMO features. We care because it had potential to be something other than a generic F2P MMO. But they then decided to put generic MMO questing (and other generic MMO stuff) into the game, because that's what everyone wants obviously, and this change of direction ruined the game. Hell, look at thumping, rather than being a skill based activity people randomly join in with leading to great unplanned fights it's now basically gear-gated, with there being no point in trying if you're not in orange gear or whatever. And events/instances are the same, gear-gated rather than skill-gated.
They listened to the grogenard MMO players, and that ruined the game like it always fucking does.

To be honest, the very very early releases of Firefall was really good. It was a heap of fun trying to find good spots to extract resources and defending the thumpers.
