I greatly understand why people love classic feeling mario levels, hell I do too.

My problem is that whenever I try making a course like that, it doesn't feel "mario"-like to me most of the time.

blame the limited editor for that

It's on now lads.
It worked on my side, so it's probably okay to post: The userscript for mass unbooking.

It might need a few more tests, but I'd need to clear some more of my own bookmarked levels for that.

This link also has the regular userscript for bookmarking while browsing, in case you don't have it yet.

>My problem is that whenever I try making a course like that, it doesn't feel "mario"-like to me most of the time.
Well with classical levels you can still be original and try coming up with a unique theme.
One of my favorite levels that I've made is set on a ghost train full of Dry Bones and Boos, try making something like this.
>>
>>321912068
I think that's because original Mario levels were designed to be played in a sequence, with your coins, lives, and powerup status carried over. In Mario Maker you only play one level at a time, so everything is designed with only the now in mind. If you were to copy pretty much any SMB1 level exactly it would probably feel very short and easy.

They need the option to create level sets, then we can make our own full Mario worlds where classic style levels would fit in nicely.

Sup guys, I recently reuploaded every level in my campaign in order. Getting rid of the stars and comments was sad, but hopefully it makes playing the whole thing through more enjoyable for you guys. Two Twins Travel Through Time attempts to create levels with minimal gimmicks (no giant enemies, no clown car shooting section, etc) that go through all Mario game styles.

It starts with 1-1: Happy Hills https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/8B27-0000-014E-D3BB

All the way up to 4-4: Day of Disaster https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/9FE5-0000-0155-0D1E

There's a Yoshi hidden in 3-1, see if you can find it!

Now to play levels ITT

Worried, but I'll try yours out.

>>321912205
The editor's fine. Sure, it doesn't give enough freedom to remake the originals perfectly, but there's so many possible courses already that it's not a problem.
>>
>>321912346
Magikoopas are needlessly abundant and irritating

>>321912736
That was a really well balanced level. I loved every part of it from the well timed challenges to the needed down times where shit isn't trying to murder you every 2 seconds. But that bowser Junior fight is the only problem. I killed him with the press of the P switch so I couldn't advance. Intentional or not that bothered the hell out of me.

>>
>>321912736
Just played, beat, and starred your course. I can tell you why its starred so much.
1. It has a good balance of challenge. Not too easy, or too hard.
2. Each section has variety. It's never a single section that is dull with the same thing over and over. even the first section starts normal, then has koopa jumps instead, then the door to the next area.

Variety is the spice of life, and your course has lots of variety and lots of balance. Well done.
>>
>>321914860
Also you can take an existing theme and turn into something different.
It's what I did with the SMB3 castle in one of my levels, I turned it into a lava lake you have to cross using a ''raft'' made of moving platforms.

Propelled was a fun little stage when it comes to propeller shroom experiments.

Falling Springs is cool, and a interesting concept. I would be interested in seeing someone make a entire feature length level based around that idea.

And Conveyer canon is a cool level as well, with some interesting mechanics.

Overall, it feels like you are great with ideas and concepts, and can make fun short levels based around said concepts. I would be interested in seeing you flesh one of those levels out more someday.

Your levels lack polish. Tiptoe Through The Tulips could work as a part of a level, but as a whole level it's lacking in excitement. In the necromancer's mansion I have no idea how to go to the right after the Mushroom/Flower/Coin bit, and the down arrow doesn't help. You get bombarded by bones you can do nothing about if you take any path but the coin path. How am I supposed to get to the right?

Try to go through your levels as if you knew nothing about them, or ask someone to do it for you. That should help you with polish/guidance.

>World Record Races - 1 (Hard)*
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/BC41-0000-0155-381A
A recent Super Meat Boy style level, try to complete the level with the fastest time possible, or at all. The level has an upper and lower path, which are accessible at the start and midpoint. Here's a few visuals queues to be aware of:
>An 'R' of coins means be ready to spin jump
>An 'A' of coins means be ready to P-Switch jump
>Diagonal arrows usually represent wall jumping or the direction you should jump/fall
>Up arrows directly left or right of an enemy means hold A to high jump off of them
My record is 22 seconds, so see if you can beat that. This is actually an updated version; the original had over 300 plays, but I had to fix a minor mistake that had a major impact on the world record time, so unfortunately this version has no plays. :(

Yeah, I played Piranha man and while it looked gorgeous a few things irked me. For example, a fast escalator on the bottom of the vine part would make backtracking much less tedious, and a checkpoint would be great.

ID: 83B5-0000-011D-D4FA
Bookmark: https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/83B5-0000-011D-D4FA

Description: A dungeon themed platformer with traps, tricks, perilous jumps, puzzles, and a boss fight, all worthy of our favorite Hyrulian Hero.

After some feedback the stage has been scaled back in difficulty a bit, but be aware as the stage progresses it does get a little harder. It's challenging, but not impossible. A little trial and error, like many dungeon videogames, will get you through. Checkpoints will be your saving grace. Stop, look around, and think. There's a solution to all problems. There are also some pretty nasty tricks, so be patient.

protip- The hanging sticky ghosts? Stop moving and they'll pass right over you.

Difficulty: Medium/ Hard

Feedback on both stages would be much appreciated as I work on further endeavors.

Okay, hypothetical time... Let's say you can get five things from this image into the next SMM update, but the catch is that everything else will never show up in a future update. What five things do you choose? And don't say slopes, because we all want slopes and everyone is going to waste an answer on SLOPES, so it's a void option. Choose something else.

Tilesets and other editing tools are unlocked just by spending time in the level editor.

Different costumes for the special mushroom are unlocked by playing 100 Mario Challenge - you get a new costume every time you beat the challenge.

I got this game for christmas and after playing a ton of levels I decided to try and make one myself:

https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/65AA-0000-0153-9139

It's a chilling story of a troubled young man's life with maybe slightly challenging jumps. It's difficult for me to say if it's too hard or not since I was able to clear it and I am shit at platformers, but it has 40 attempts and 0 clears so I am hoping to hear if the jumps are too bullshit.

One tip for the level: don't kill the giant turtle with a fireball, you need the body or shell to make the jump to the stairs behind it.
>>
>someone actually made the thread besides me

enjoying your christmas present kiddos? at least i don't have to make a /vg/ thread.
>>
>>321938948
Shake a directional arrow to make a checkpoint.

Also I killed that turtle on my first go with a fireball. If you put a turtle in a pipe/bullet bill cannon you can produce them forever.
>>
>>321939953
There's a checkpoint in the level before one of the "harder" jumps.

I guess I should add something that forces you to lose the fire flower before the FIRST BOSS (giant turtle). I can't really make the turtles infinite because the turtle is part of the amazing storyline and it wouldn't make sense if there was more than the one
>>
>>321940384
you can have a checkpoint per map section so 2 in total i think?
>>
>>321936178

Alright so I made some changes and here's v.1.01:

https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/30B6-0000-0157-F75D

changelog:
- Moved mushroom from start to HELP room to avoid players losing mushroom at the start before it is needed
- Changed start's door into a pipe to skip dumb transitional room
- Added a checkpoint in the PSYCHOSIS WORLD after the spinning flame thing jumps
- Replaced last set of MUSHROOM BOYS with INDESTRUCTIBLE FLOWERS OF DEATH in order to force players to lose the POWER OF THE FIRE FLOWER before confronting MARGARET

Hopefully this version is good because I had some real trouble uploading this since I suck at this game.

Good stuff. You should have more clears now thanks to that checkpoint.
>>
>go to do 100 mario challenge to unlock more costumes
>half the stages insta kill you or cover the flag pole/axe/etc with blocks
>half of whats left is auto shit

Why?
>>
>>321949029
When Nintendo put in checkpoints, they didn't change the win percentage for difficulties. So you're stuck with instadeath and Kaizo levels almost exclusively in expert.
>>
>>321949148
Can I block them? Like can I prevent their shitty levels from ever showing up again?
>>
>>321949319

Skipping is really all you have.

Levels that you instantly drop:
>Automatic levels
>Enemy spam levels
>Levels that start with something that kills you if you don't immediately move
>Levels that have cheap traps (doors that lead to death, invisible blocks over a pit, etc) very early or at all

>>Levels that start with something that kills you if you don't immediately move
I do this sometimes, but I try to make sure that you have some time to get your bearings and have around 3 in game seconds to react

There's some times where I have to skip a level in Expert, but I star it anyway because while it's hard as balls, it has some ingenuity to it that makes me want to have a solid play session for it.

There was a really cool one that was sort of an autoscroller, where you're in a super cramped box that moves along tracks, and you have to duck to avoid stuff and jump to get a helmet powerup to pass through some saws. Horrible for 100 Mario, but an excellently made level.
>>
>>321950961
Why are the Japanese so bad at making levels anyway?
>>
>>321911131
Since buying Super Mario Maker, I've actually played more levels than make any.

Hell, I only published one level.
>>
>>321950961
I don't mind automatic levels when I'm playing 100-Mario Challenge. It just means less effort needed in unlocking costumes.

just created this shit, it should be pretty fucking hard...took me like 2-3 hours to upload it

just take some good platforming and a little bit of luck in the start

Why the fuck isn't there a general for this garbage on /vg/? Like what the fuck. Even the most retarded shit like katawa shoujo still has one.

101's fighter fly, you get it for beating hard gnat attack.

dunno about 112.
>>
>>321965993
I haven't bothered with your levels just yet. I will probably do them next.

>>321966090
/vg/ is scum. That's all. These threads also have an element of being spontaneous, even if they are frequent.
>>
>>321965317
101 is Fighter Fly, which can be unlocked when you beat Hard Mode in Gnat Attack.

112 is Sky Pop (Mario riding an airplane like in Super Mario Land). It can't be unlocked yet.

About to play some of the stages in this thread. Here's my newest:

Haven't made a course since a little after the checkpoint update, so I made this level to incorporate both using and working around the newly added Bumpers. No impossible parts, just tried going for a decent difficulty. Think you can find the hidden shortcut that's sure to tilt the heads of people looking to get the fastest time?
>>
>tfw you don't stop playing a /v/ level until you get the world record

>>321967726
>tfw you don't even try and get the world record
Sometimes I just play the level a couple more times to make the time better whenever it happens, unless if it was a BS one.
>>
>>
I swear you get more levels without any creativity and just pure mind boggling frustration when you play this game than anything else.

What fucking idiot thinks 16 bowsers in flying ships is good level design?

>Oh right, they're all 12.

Is this fanmade?

I beat that level a couple nights ago, but it looks like he changed that section. Holy cow, so I'm guessing the p-switch is down there near the door, making you have to do two circuits through that. I thought it was funny that I set the record at 27 minutes lol.

There is one more section after that door, prepare.

>it's a decent level with fairly hard parts but overall okay.

I don't know why complain about jap levels. I got all my expert mario challenge runs before checkpoints even came out and i hardly had trouble. Yeah there's some douchebag levels out there or levels that are just plain terrible but they're skippable if things get too rough. Plus finding a gem in the rough is great way to find someone to follow.

>>321968319
It's pretty garbage when you're doing challenge and you get one of the "99.9% IMPOSSIBLE!) levels by some Jap.

Mother fucker I ain't spending an hour trying to bounce a shell off a wall to use to jump to a 1x1 ice platform surrounded by spikes in the sky with squid flying around it.
>>
>>321968595
I just skip any cheap trick levels like that as well as most spike maze levels. Sometimes the enemy spam can crack me up for some reason.
>>
>>321952535
Just got railed with one of these. Was giant underwater maze with the walls being spikes.
>>
>>321968595
Yeah it blows, but if it's that bad you CAN just skip it. I know it's not the best solution but it's all we got right now.
>>
>>321946915

I got stuck at the beginning of the maze after the checkpoint. Am I alone in this?
>>
Finished my first course. It's heavily inspired by La Mulana

>Will you find the portal to the domain of the fabled three head chimera!?
or
>Will you slough through the hidden horrors of an abandoned factory from the legendary Great Mushroom War!?

If someone could finally beat this for me that would be amazing.

I'm nearly ready to upload an "easy" setting version of Battleship, the ships are in different spots and the obstacles are lighter.
>>
>>321968916
The maze at the start of the subworld? Stuck how exactly?
>>
>>321968928
Awesome, I was thinking of making a La-Mulana level with Captain Toad.

I'll see what I can do.
