So whats the best strategy to remain relevant in this game?
I always feel like I'm behind my friends when we're playing in groups of 6-7. I use religion to inflate my score sometimes but they always seem to be a step ahead.
I do little things like setting cities to production focus and messing with citizens, but it's not enough. Also I'm almost always behind in military, and only build up at the last second when there is a threat.

Is this the sort of game where you can still win without going for the "best" strategy every time? From what I've seen in these threads, it seems like some people just do the same things in every match they play. That sounds really fucking boring, to have figured a completely optimal way to play the game that works every time.

In every Civ game I've played Alexander the great was a massive backstabbing cunt and three quarters while Julius was the best of bros. I now make it a habit to kill the shit out of Greece whenever I run into it.

On emperor and below you can do whatever and still win. On immortal and deity you go for technology and at some point you can choose to keep pursuing it or go for a different victory.
This is only in regards to playing with AIs and the way they are scaled in difficulty where they "cheat" on higher levels. You start behind in tech and you have to catch up to have a fighting chance, if you go to war they all hate you for eternity, even if you did not declare the war.

I'm pretty new to Civ in general, I've got about 30 hours in and can do a science victory at around 2020. I'm just getting into trying a culture/religion victory, what civs work best for this?

I've never gone to war with Askia. Never. He's the only leader I've never been to war with, over 1.3k hours of Civ V. I've been backstabbed by fucking Theodora before, even, as rare as that may be, but never by Askia. Whenever he gets attacked, I always make sure to help him.

civ was never that great at any of those things to be honest, except graphics. And civ 5 has the best graphics of any civ. Only legitimate gripe for the military is that you can't stack units. They should have just let you stack units and implemented an attrition mechanic that increases if you have more units stacked in one hex.
