Not that I dislike it, but I don't get understand why everyone says it's the pinnacle of the series. The multiplayer is as unbalanced as any other, the graphics are lackluster, and the campaign has some great moments but is pretty generic otherwise.
Same goes for Assassin's Creed 2. Sure it did a lot of things right but the combat was god awful and there's almost no replay value after you beat the story and assassination missions.

I was there playing it as soon as it came out, and the graphics were actually pretty disappointing after all of the hype around how advanced they would be (and how advanced they looked a year or two earlier when the game was first shown and the engine was actually current). By the time the game came out it was actually behind the times in terms of graphics technology. I always thought it was ugly as shit, not even because of the already-outdated graphics, but because the texturing was terrible and the shaders, while relatively impressive for the time, still weren't very good and felt like too little too late.
And the novelty of the gravity gun wore off pretty fast.
However, it was a pioneer in the field of "linear storytelling FPSs", which is why it was so popular and has remained so popular for so long.

I think good difficulty should center around punishment. The only time I think the difficulty is unjustifiable is the boss fights, and how their attacks are barely telegraphed and can kill you in one hit. The game's never unfair, you just have to think on your feet at all times and make sure you don't slip up. It's like a fighting game or MOBA in that regard - you get caught out of position, or in an animation from an attack that was times poorly, and you're leaving yourself wide open.
Try Dark Souls 2. The first game does have its moments of bullshit difficulty and insanely useful things that are impossible to know without using guides (for anyone who's played the game: getting the Drake Sword, beating the Ceaseless Discharge/getting him to fall off the cliff, getting past the Anor Londo archers), but I didn't have a single death in DaS2 where I wasn't able to think to myself, "okay, I fucked up". The bosses give you actual breathing room, and the difficulty doesn't feel like a meme.

True, I ain't from the NES era though so I guess I can't really appreciate this kind of punishment. I prefer a fight being actually difficult and tight controls, some quirks at times are acceptable but Souls games dont have what I can call tight controls.

I just hate that all the little extras and details got taken out. The story wasn't terrible in 4 and it had that. If we had 5's story with real money earning not forced only through the stock market... and the side events of 4 then I'd be happier.

I know what you mean. I play the game and I don't mind the fighting itself, but I don't like the overall presentation. Something about the sound effects, the art style, the narrator, etc. just kinda turn me off. I'm not very experienced in fighting games, and even I don't like how slow it is. My favorite is still Capcom vs. SNK.

Just finished the game. It's overall ok, if only they focused more on making you care about the characters and made your decisions actually matter. They worked too much on making huge spaces where absolutely nothing happened and you we're forced to walk through. Save system was shit, you had to save on your own or be forced to go through shitty combat again. No actual sprinting outside of combat, which itself needed to recharge. Leveling up doesn't do that much, perks you get are misleading, like first aid, which only gives you more health per medic pack use, it's not an actual talent. Companions are fucking stupid and you cant use their talents outside of battle, so you end up sacrificing your upgrade points. Medigel is shit, any mindless monkey could hack a "hard" crate. There's other tid bits I'm missing but they keep you from enjoying the game altogether. Only good shit is the soundtrack and getting to fuck the asari qt.

Whats worst is many other low budget series are treated as if they are committing a crime just by virtue of their existence, while EDF gets a pass for literally striving to stay bad.
EDF (and really its fans) are the worst.
