So, being that i've been playing games since the days of arcades, why exactly have I never seen the title "gameplay designer" before under any context?
I am at a loss to what this would entail, and any answer i'm given in this thread seems so vague that it might as well be a commercial for mail-you-a-fake-degree gaming university about tightening up the graphics on level 3, but with "graphics" replaced by "gameplay."
As far as I know most rough ideas about a game are determined at a more macro level. You'll have specifics worked out by people who (presumably like this guy) are not relevant to the scope of the full game. I'm just going to stick with ideas guy.

Compare all the different halo's and look at the differences in weapons and how they work.
The reason you never see job openings is because you don't really need that many of them for some reason and the game creators themselves generally fill this role on their own.
