XI was fine. It actually felt and played like a Final Fantasy game with online elements.
It's XIV that had no right to be a Final Fantasy title since it's pretty Anti-Final Fantasy

It was utter bullshit they labeled this clearly spinoff title mainline for more sales. You didn't see Blizzard call WoW Warcraft 4, or Zenimax call TESO Elder Scrolls 6.
Square Enix even pulled this bullshit with Dragon Quest X, a game they have no intention of bringing to the west, so now I can't say that I've played every single main title.
