Mario Maker Thread? Here's my newest Shoot Em Up Level.

https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/B2D5-0000-0144-F042

Quite frankly I think it's too hard for what I intend. I wanted to do a Shmup level for every theme, but I have never ever fucking EVER liked the Ghost House theme. But it's there, and I wanted to stay within the confines of said theme. Simply put, there's too much dodging, not enough shooting shit. But that's just how I feel.

Is it fine as is, and if not, is it possible to make it a good stage without making changes to the level theme?

Toad Road is a game I am making that will focus on being mostly easy levels but very speedrun friendly.
In the comments I give a time to beat if you want to. There's also a challenge coin in each level, which is the flying coin you might find hiding in a block.
The bookmark hasn't updated for them yet but here are the codes if you want to play one
Toad Road 1-1: Hillside Stroll (A738-0000-0151-E3D4)
Toad Road 1-2: Platform Plaza (1414-0000-0152-09EA)
Toad Road 1-3: Turtle Temple (E003-0000-0152-694B)

Hey, world record!

It was OK.

Repetition is the main problem. I like killing the dry bones by breaking the floor but for every single obstacle that gets old quite fast. If it was a more traditional shmup level that would make a neat challenge towards the end.

I get you were going for an undead spooky motif, just my opinion on the gameplay of i. Also as a boo house I thought it could use more alternate path ways like doors or warp pipes.

Ill go play your other levels

Fast paced level that is a bit difficult but shouldn't be too hard if you pace yourself.
>>
>>321851682

Thanks. That's how I felt too. But what kind of obstacles could I sub in earlier on that don't break the theme too badly?

I bought this as a present for myself on Christmas, and I think my friend and I are starting to get the hang of it. This is the first level I think was actually fun and challenging.

Haven't made a course since a little after the checkpoint update, so I made this level to incorporate both using and working around the newly added Bumpers. No impossible parts, just tried going for a decent difficulty. Think you can find the hidden shortcut that's sure to tilt the heads of people looking to get the fastest time?
>>
>>321852670
It's tricky. Maybe it's just too long.

By the way, mount molehill was awesome
>>
>>321850657
I starred it, it was fun, but the challenge was mostly due to the screen scrolling, not because of enemy placement. Definitely needs more killing shit.

Heist & Getaway: Dungeon Train!

ID: 326D-0000-0151-3B5F
Bookmark: https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/326D-0000-0151-3B5F

Description: A scrolling train-themed obstacle course, help Waluigi rob a mushroom kingdom bank AND passing train! Be warned though, this choo-choo is of the infamous "dungeon train" variety, meaning it has the potential to be infinite! Inspired by the Adventure Time episode "Dungeon Train", the stage is a fast moving, think-quick-on-your-feet platformer... potentially frustrating but NOT impossible!

Medium/Hard

>>321855083
The two springs right after the bridge with the two P switches. For some reason I could never high jump. Having to go through all that other bullshit to retry killed my morale and by the final room I couldnt feel anything. I came to when I actually landed in the clown copter and realized it was over.

It was stupidly difficult but didn't feel like some kaizo nonsense so it was pretty good

ID: 83B5-0000-011D-D4FA
Bookmark: https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/83B5-0000-011D-D4FA

Description: A dungeon themed platformer with traps, tricks, perilous jumps, puzzles, and a boss fight, all worthy of our favorite Hyrulian Hero.

After some feedback the stage has been scaled back in difficulty a bit, but be aware as the stage progresses it does get a little harder. It's challenging, but not impossible. A little trial and error, like many dungeon videogames, will get you through. Checkpoints will be your saving grace. Stop, look around, and think. There's a solution to all problems. There are also some pretty nasty tricks, so be patient.

protip- The hanging sticky ghosts? Stop moving and they'll pass right over you.

I also gotta admit I like how those certain level types were made into the games they weren't originally in. Their tracks are simple but nice.

I got inspired by all those "100% completion rate" stages I've been coming across when doing easy mode 100 Mario Challenge. It's usually Japanese creators making those types of levels.

I'm not sure if mine qualifies, but I figure you'd have to try very hard to lose on purpose.
>>

I'm pretty sure you could just stand there and do nothing to wait for the time to run out as the level doesn't move you automatically, but someone would have to be real dedicated and bored to actually bother with doing that.

>>321863049
The game is what you make it. I have more fun creating and sharing my levels than I do playing others levels most of the time. It's also being updated constantly with new features, so I think they realize that people were/are unhappy with how little it had in terms of functionality initially and they're trying to rectify it.
>>
Stop posting threads about this game

I don't have the fucking money to get a Wii U and the game and it's killing me.
>>
>>321863153
I was legit hyped for this game but compared to lbp it is small time

It is so so basic for a level creator, and you are limited to the physics of the Mario game you are basing your level on. You can't mix physics up and you can't make anything complex. It is ridiculously limited.

It has no form of any kind of basic computer logic or ai control and has nothing which allows you to alter the flow of the game

It's a farce of a level creator in my opinion and it infuriates me that I spent near retail price of a standard game for it. To add insult to injury the unlocks keep characters/avatars you get from shit official levels are quite literally just advertisements, even Mercedes-Benz is there again to lap up the market.
>>
>>321863821
That's the point.
>>
>>321863821
Some people have gotten creative, but I gotta agree. It had a lot more potential than what it is. Still, I find it pretty fun.
>>
>>321863153
>lack of content is okay when nintendo does it
anon is right though, if you play a game like littlebigplanet then play this the difference is huge, you can make full games across multiple genres in the former but Mario maker is stuck with maybe 70 different items tops and small limited level creator with limited enemy use
>>
>>321863892
Charging near full retail price for a level maker which should have just been a side thing to q full Mario game is a scam desu
>>
>>321863962
>you can make full games across multiple genres in the former
That's not the point of Mario Maker though. It's a Mario Maker not a whatever the fuck you want maker. It's much more focused and intuitive.
>>
>>321864072

>all this fucking sour grapes.

If you have such an intense hard on for Little Big Planet, what's stopping you from playing it? I've tried the PSP game and the console demo and it bored me to fucking tears. Yes Mario Maker lacks some basic options and SLOPES but as a game it feels great, and it's not trying accommodate every genre of games in a half assed way, but rather do platforming very well.
>>
>>321864143
There should be more enemies and blocks, but people who are asking for "basic computer logic or ai control" are missing the point of the game.
>>
>>321864334
It's not grapes it's buyers remorse.

I bought it as my new level maker fix and it failed to deliver.

Considering I can literally make a Mario level in lbp3 complete with the exact same platforming and physics this was a total waste of money. You can't customise shit on Mario maker

You can't even make custom backgrounds or textures, how can you excuse that shit?

Admit it this should have been a free bonus on a Mario game, not a nearly full retail charged product

>>
>>321863962
Please don't put words in my mouth. I never said that it was okay when Nintendo does it. What I actually said was that people were/are unhappy with the lack of features, but with recent updates Nintendo has been adding some in. Some people are happy with that, others still want more, and that's completely understandable. Those of us that are happy with the tools we're given though are making the best of it to create some pretty fun levels. I can't make Gradius stages, sure, but if I wanted to do that I'd use some other game maker program. This is Mario Maker for a reason.

>>321864918
Maybe you'll be able to if they ever make a sequel. Let's not forget that a lot of the huge changes that allowed for things like first person shooters and shmups in LBP didn't come until the second game. Sure you could do a lot with the first game, but the second game is where all the really crazy mods and things happened because they expanded the toolset. This is the first game in what could be a series, which isn't an excuse for its lack of features, but it leaves hope for things like a Mario Kart/RPG Maker in the future.
>>
>>321865010
It also looks like it was going half speed.
>>
>>321864808
It's about the fact you can make other things if you wanted. Mario maker limits you to making extremely basic shit which can only be made complex by making ridiculously autistic levels which abuses the physics to make them nigh impossible and skip bait, play expert and you'll see the shit I'm talking about.

And no, I mean by custom backgrounds a basic form of paint tool and decals to create unique looking worlds. There is nothing but the same copy paste 15 or so backdrops and level formats. It's inexcusable for something like this to be do basic when the competition let's you do so much more.

Sure you are going to have a harder time making a flawless Mario level in a game like lbp but it is possible with effort and you can also make hundreds if different genres and microgames in it, whereas Mario maker you are stuck with just one type of level and extremely limited at even that

Giant Spiny Castle:

Thwomp Island:
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/5C36-0000-0146-404B

Sledge Bros' BBQ Castle:

>World Record Races - 1 (Hard) *Dev record is 24 seconds
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/4E4E-0000-014A-6B1C
A new level fresh off the stove top! It's a bit of a Super Meat Boy level, inspired by the recently added WR times; try to complete the level with the fastest time possible, and hopefully not lose it in a day. The level has an upper and lower path, which are accessible at the start and midpoint; there's also a few spots where you can safely fall from the top and enter the bottom route, though most of the time falling from the top route will kill you. Here's a few visuals queues to be aware of:
>An 'R' of coins means be ready to spin jump
>An 'A' of coins means be ready to P-Switch jump
>Diagonal arrows usually represent wall jumping or the direction you should jump/fall
>Up arrows directly left or right of an enemy means hold A to high jump off of them

>Mario Plays Tetris
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/53A9-0000-011A-C9A0
A clever level about... Tetris! Well, Tetris platforming, but it's close enough. Keep note, the height from the floor to the ceiling (10 blocks) it meant to represent the width of the Tetris game field. Just think of it as playing Tetris sideways.

>The Nicest Bridge Around
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/EFC4-0000-0123-701F
The last of my 5-part bridge series. This is the best looking bridge, and probably the most fun.

>A Pair of Parallel Bridges
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/DA84-0000-011D-AFAB
I need some more clears on this level so it's not an expert level. I guess small children can't figure out the two minor puzzles in the level... The level is a mirror of itself, by the way.

Let me know what you think of my levels! And thanks for playing!

Hey guys, I finally reuploaded every level in order in my campaign! Two Twins Travel Through Time attempts to create levels with minimal gimmicks (no giant enemies, no clown car shooting section, etc) that go through all Mario game styles.

It wasn't pretty getting rid of the comments and star counts, but now it's in a more intuitive format so hopefully you guys try it out!

It starts with 1-1: Happy Hills https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/8B27-0000-014E-D3BB

All the way up to 4-4: Day of Disaster https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/9FE5-0000-0155-0D1E

So I updated the World Record Races level, because apparently adding a checkpoint was a bad idea. I was afraid that adding a checkpoint would fuck up WR times, so I guess now people just need to suffer with having to play the entire course in one go. Updated version here:

https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/BC41-0000-0155-381A

While re-uploading this course, I managed to get an even better time of 22 seconds. So the dev record is now 22 secs. The original version will be deleted, so bookmark the updated version.

There seem to be a ton of unlockable 8-bit skins in this game, also I saw a load of event stages. My question: Is there anything missable? Or any timed content? I literally just got this game and I need to know if I can take my time or if I should do the oldest event stage ASAP before a new one releases and potentially pushes the oldest one from the list, you know what I'm saying?
>>
>>321881205
Well I guess there's the giant mushroom that's locked behind a paywall (you have to buy a stupid Amiibo thing), and the fly costume requires you to beat the fly swatting minigame on hard mode which is probably near impossible. Aside from those, nothing really missable.
>>
Fungus Hangout
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/FF15-0000-014F-8052
A level primarily based on Goombas, and has a tricky P-Switch easter egg. It was originally going to be a castle level, but on the end I chose the airship skin for it.

Flood the Fortress
https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/courses/3BDE-0000-012A-188D
Level where you go into an underwater fortress and flood areas of it to get to different areas. It would have been longer, but you can only have so many warp pipes.
>>
>>321861149

It was fun because you were generous with powerups, but I really don't like the way the bone fish AI works. It can trigger outside of the screen which is bad for autoscroll levels (purely distance based regardless of context), and it doesn't trigger while shooting off the cannon.

Out of your control, I know, but I doubt I'll use these enemies myself because of that.

Not an Adventure Time fan? :p No seriously, I hear you, and I figured that would be a common response. That's what puts this level, I feel, into the Expert category. The level itself isn't terribly hard, and I include plenty of power ups. The wrong choice IS frustrating, but it's incredibly rewarding once you pick the correct tube (you have a 1 in 5 chance, btw- one is a dud).

I drew some inspiration for Super Mario Bros 4-4, the infinite castle, another infamous looping level. I hope you reconsider giving it another go, though I respect your opinion otherwise.

For anyone else intrigued, check out the level here:

Le nom est incroyable, l'ambiance est incroyable. The jump off that skull platform is next to impossible to see coming the first time around though, so I feel like the lava insta kill is a bit much.
>>321882287
The piranha plant after the checkpoint can fall off without you ever getting to it. I feel like the level would have gained from a playtester who doesn't know how the level works in advance, because as it stands there's a lot of blind jumping going on.
>>321881691
Your turn.
>>321883690
Thanks! If you mean between the first and second checkpoint, it's a mix of every single level from worlds 1 through 3. Starts off with the end of 1-1, then you get the loop around P-Switch from 1-2, etc... It's meant as a finale of sorts. In "deepest lore" territory, it's the result of Kammy messing around with the time portal to frantically try to get new minions because you're plowing through them so quickly.
>>
>>321879690
Pretty good for a first level. I felt like it was a little lacking, but I'm assuming that's cause you don't have it all unlocked. I'm not sure if you made the level with wall spin-jumping in mind, but spinning on the plants made it pretty easy.

Just on the off chance if you wanted to unlock everything within a few hours, just go to the course maker and wait for about 5 minutes, then a new delivery should arrive soon.

After you get that notification, just spam regular blocks everywhere on your level. Seriously just hold it down and fill up the screen with blocks and within a minute or 2 the shipment will always arrive early.
>>
>>321871065
I got stuck for a bit, but figured it out after reading the title (no I'm not the guy that commented just that on the level.) That was a good puzzle.
>>321855450
The hammer bros jumping onto the conveyor belt floor and chasing you with hammers really rustled my jimmies.
>>321850657
The FFs were spaced out nicely, but destroying some block sections felt much harder without a powerup. Good level, though.
>>321874948
The different levels of hell and how they're represented was fun and creative, and you had some nice obstacles in the level. Some parts, like the flying spiny's and the magikoopa after the midpoint, and the vine climbing section, were rather tedious in their own ways, but I love the theme of the level and how you executed it.
>>
>>321881691
Fungus Hideout is not only a very good looking stage, but a fun one as well. Great job. Flood the Fortress is also great, though I'm not sure I get why flooding a castle makes Bowser giant?

Stuck to the theme really well, a few areas feel a bit "cheap" and the segment where you have to wait for the P-switch is a bit too long. Otherwise nice level.

The NSMBU level is a bit of a puzzle, but not too hard. The other 2 are a bit SMB2J-ish

how do I stop myself from making levels too difficult?

Make them easier.
>>
>>321890171
Less enemies and less pits.

Ideally you should try to build a steady difficulty curve. If the level starts off easy and the difficulty curve feels natural and doesn't spike, players will want to play it to the end even if they aren't that good at games.

Fun stage so far but the room with a million magikoopas is a clusterfuck and it's impossible to see anything, not to mention the way to go.

lol, and right after that I finish the level. Seems like they can destroy the end goal as well, as long as you're lucky they can create a path.

You're fantastic at puzzles mate, but your levels suffer from the time limit. Right now the world record is over the time limit, so you're pretty much guaranteed a time up.

How is mario maker more intuitive than little big planet? I'm saying this as someone who really really REALLY fucking wants mario maker.

It helps that the core gameplay is way better than LBP

As someone with both: less freedom means more intuitive controls for creation and easier access to what you want to put in your level.

LBP has multiple layers, this has not. Thus, creating a level is as easy as drawing what you want on the screen. LBP allows you to create conditions for progress, this is pure Mario. Instead, you have access to like a fifth of all the pieces you can set at a time, without having to access a menu.

tl;dr It's streamlined, thus it's more intuitive.

It's all a matter of point of view, though you have to tinker a lot more with LBP to create something as fun as a Mario level in my opinion.

Good job on Space Wars: Planet Z. My only complaint was the part right before Bowser when you get the fire clown car you can't drop below on the blue platform while your big because of the narrow hallway, and when I would drop the clown car off and run back the bar would respawn and the clown car would despawn.

Yeah, the boss fight is supposed to be initially terrifying, but it can be done in under 15 seconds if you focus and think, much like the rest of the course.

I agree about the time limit. I'd remove it or set it to 999 if I could. It's possible to beat the second course in under 6 minutes, but that's only if you rush through each part perfectly.

Intuitive means finding or doing things comes naturally and makes sense. Having less content doesn't necessarily mean it's intuitive. I haven't played it yet, I'm looking forward to it though. I think it looks really good but I also think saying LBP isn't arguably better is just incorrect. There's definitely an argument that can be made for why it is better and it's a fair argument to make.
