Because the International Olympic Committee asks for it to be made. It helps promote the Olympics. Since Sega still owns the license, they ask them to make more games. Then Sega asks Nintendo to partner up and then they both benefit from it.

I don't mind that these games are being made. There's obviously a market for them if they keep getting sequels. Or the Olympic committee just pays enough out of pocket. Either way, profit.
But there's really no reason they couldn't make a platformer crossover too. It's not very hard to imagine a way they could work together.

It was really good or even great if you got into it. As said in my first post, there is a quite sizable barrier of entry surrounding the game. If you pass it you'll enjoy the game. If not you'll be disappointed or bored with the game. I personally passed the barrier.

To be fair Camelot weren't really the biggest ones at fault wih Ultra Smash. The game itself is not terribly designed, but rather just lazy and lacking lots of content. Nintendo simply wanted a quick Mario title for the holiday season. Any chances at an extension for more development time were abolished by the delays of The Legend of Zelda for Wii U and Star Foz Zero, which were both previously planned to be the Wii U's two big titles of 2015.

Honestly there really is no way they could make a Mario and Sonic platformer without pissing off both sides. Mario fans would be mad they have to lose quality platforming and level design and Sonic fans would be mad because they hate Mario.
The only options are RPG something like the super star series, Fighting game, or Party game which they went with.
