So I heard XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a remake of the original one from the 90s.

Is it worth playing this and the original? Or should I just play one?
>>
>>321830875
Both are worth playing but be warned that they're both played differently compared to each other

Also get Enemy within as it updates the base game and includes the options to gene mod your troops or turn them into spess mehreen dreadnoughts. The long war mod also exists to add new layers of complexity (and artificial difficulty) to the game
>>
>>321830875
You should play both but the original will always be better than EU even with the xpac and mods.

The new one looks like it'll bring something new to the table and fit the remake model better. The remake was lacking in a lot of ways but still very enjoyable.
>>
Oh is this the XCOM thread?

>tfw normal feels casual
>classic pushes my shit in

Feels bad man.
>>
I really liked XCOM:EU/EW and the new Shadowruns. Are there any games on Steam that are like that?
>>
The remake was a console reboot. Everything about it was streamlined for consoles, for better or worse.

But at the end of the day, it is an amazing strategy game. Very challenging game, with a lot of mileage. The modding scene is pretty heavy with the Long War mod.

XCOM 2 is bucking the console streamlining shit and going full PC exclusive, it is also considerably more complex.
>>
>>321830875
play enemy unknown
if you like it get enemy within
if you like it and are able to play on classic, go ahead and try the original

if you're really into it, might wanna try xenonauts too

you can try the long war mod for enemy within, but keep in mind the difficulty is fucking ridiculous even on the lowest available difficulty for it
>>
>>321830875
I'd wait for Xcom 2 at this point.

Looks to be better in pretty much every way. but Enemy Unknown was also really good.
>>
>>321831618
Classically people who liked xcom were also fans of Jagged Alliance (JA2 being the height of the series).
>>
It's like the same genre but games are very different. This 2-turn system changes things very much but it is a decent game. Simplified, but very fun. For a modern remake of xcom check xenonauts.

It's fun, but if you're going to get it you should just get EW as it adds some new shit and mechanics.

And Long War is fucking amazing.

It's a very unforgiving and challenging game. On any mode but Normal it borders on unfair and infuriating.

As you should anon.

As you should.

XCOM 2 starts in a universe where you basically failed very early on in XCOM: Enemy Unknown, so you could watch the intro to EU on YouTube and then go straight into 2 if you wanted to.

EU is very fun though with the Enemy Within add-on, and acts as a tutorial for the Long War mod (if you're fucking hardcore)
>>
>>321834762

Yes. Why would you ignore a game just because its sequel is coming out?
>>
>>321834979
>>321833019

I loved the new classes and balancing LW did but holy shit the actual and artificial difficulty is unfair. It's not even challenging, it's just a constant punch in the balls.

Now in XCOM 2 your soldiers can get PTSD!

Why? We don't know if it's any good yet and Firaxis games suck cock at launch. Xcom EU is 75% off on sale so who there is no reason not to pick it up.
>>

I'd get PSTD just walking into that alien infested room.
>>
>>321830875
The original is fantastic but age has not been kind to the round-about controls and the "FUCK YOU" difficulty. It is worth a look but you'll probably stick with Enemy Unknown far longer thanks to its modernity.

>>321836072
Great, that means more savescumming so I don't end up with a useless soldier thanks to the RNG!

If I saw that bullshit in my play through I would instantly uninstall LW. I've seen some pretty OP bullshit from that mod but that takes the cake.

Impossible is the point where you're really dependent on the dice rolls, even if you maximize your leverage and deal as much guaranteed damage as you can.

Feels pretty bad, but I'm always doing fine until ~month 3-4 when all the enemy types are in play and my soldiers start dropping like flies. It feels like there's only so much I can do to stop a cyberdisk crit or a mob of melee aliens from instagibing

Long war or vanilla senpai?

If you're playing vanilla stay the fuck away from half cover. The game is basically an endurance test until you can get some veterans and up your tech. To counter how wrecked your ass is getting in the tactical game, most people rush a shitton of satellites and focus on developing eco and tech as much as possible. The aliens never get any stronger than when you meet them, so playing the long game is ridiculously to your advantage even as you're encountering new types. Your tech will eventually outstrip theirs, and your unkillable titanblobs will win the day.

If you're playing Long War, bring more grenades for the melee swarms (because they'll have lightning reflexes very soon if they don't already) when you know they'll be around (terror missions, Site Recon, and the DLC missions that you should turn off because they're fucking insane in LW depending on when you get them, and might still contain this one gem with a glitched Cyberdisk that just pops up through the floor of a battleship when it feels like activating) as you'll also have access to special purpose AP grenades for taking out clusters of non-covered targets. As far as cyberdisks go, they honestly become sort of trivial in Long War. Your gunners get access to HEAT ammo in their perk tree, and you want to be rushing a couple HEAT/damage build gunners to carry your shit damage output through ballistic and maybe even laser. I personally keep damage gunners through the whole game but some people spec into the 'bullet wizard' build which trades HEAT for Shredder ammo and is centered around applying Holo targetting, shredder, and suppression to multiple targets per turn via a collection of perks.
>>
>>321845254
>playing the long game is ridiculously to your advantage

I wish EU would have Ethreals on a constant timer like UFO defence. Holding off on the base assault removes all tension from the game. I never really get the sense that I'm working against the clock like I do in the original.

Thanks familia
As a last question, is it better to train up a lot of rookies to have a bunch of moderately skilled soldiers, or just to try and train a few dudes to max as fast as possible?
>>
>>321830875
Original has simulator-style options and tactics. New one plays like a tabletop boardgame. Both are fun but the original keeps me coming back.
>>
>>321846094
Get a sniper to the point of move and shoot. They are a carry class until that point. Everyone else can wait (kinda).

Moderatly skilled soldiers are generally better if only because your whole wndgames doesn't go to shit if one person dies.

Also will is a pretty important stat that degrades with injuries, so older soldiers should be sidelined eventually.

Start on normal and then continue on classic after a couple missions. You still get the classic difficulty achievement if you care about that.

>>321846856
>Start on normal and then continue on classic after a couple missions. You still get the classic difficulty achievement if you care about that.

oh fuck, so I can do that for Impossible?
>>
Okay, so, I just started a LW playthrough with 15b3 or whatever. What the fuck is up with the pacing? Why are people talking about capturing aliens before I even performed an autopsy? Why are there terror missions long before I've captured an Outsider? What the fuck is up with transport ships appearing on month 2? It all feels horribly disjointed.
>>
>>321848604
LW is literally "This ground is too soft, I wish more of my bones were broken" difficulty.
>>
>>321848813
Did the really have to fuck the story up that much to achieve that effect? The only time I was really challenged was running into four Outsiders and the fucking month 2 terror mission. Everything else has been reasonably difficult, though I think the game would be more fun with more enemies at slightly reduced HP.
>>
>>321848604
>Why are people talking about capturing aliens before I even performed an autopsy? Why are there terror missions long before I've captured an Outsider?
Both of these happen in vanilla too, depending on your tech path/luck. The only difference is that there are some large ships you aren't expected to fight early on.
>>
>>321849472
Yeah, but I had that whole capture thing pop-up before I even finished the research for autopsies. I wasn't even a tech into the game. It's like they extended the time it takes to do things but didn't adjust the even flags accordingly. Is this intended or what?
>>
>>321849675
That's weird, in both versions I've only ever seen it happen right after you finish Xeno-Biology.
