Hey everyone!

How's that game going?

Got some good graphics?

Making good progress?

You are working on your game, right?

Why do you always have to make your posts sound so condescending, OP? It's never 'how's the gamedev going', it's always 'what, a little beta like you ISN'T working on a game? You don't want Jerome to beat you to it, do you?'

But yeah, that game's going great
>>
>>321797747
(OP here) I'm sorry Anon, I thought it was just a thing to be condescending.
In truth anyone working on game is a cool guy & full of real ambition.

it's mainly a congress simulator based on House of Cards, you bully npcs to win bill votes.
there is elections every 5 bills though so that representatives get shuffled and you have to make good on threats and promises.

Working on the placeholder pause menu. I need to redesign some things so moving between certain things is less annoying. Everything is placeholder forever I can't draw.

>>
I started doing this thing, just did breakable blocks.
Guess I'll try to make some enemies next

I'm basically aiming for a couch co-op thing, just got to figure how to make it interesting
>>
>>321800065
Heavily stylized to look like an art-deco poster. That's still a WIP though. Later iterations will have a lot more detail in scenes and stuff. These are literally just two basic levels to show off loading between levels and text-based loading for enemies and items.
>>
>>321796947
There is no real point in making a game when it won't be seen by anybody, unless you just want to exercise your code muscles. And before you bring up some indie success like Undertale, that might as well be playing the lottery, with your odds.
>>
>>321800559
LIKE MY GAME ON GREENLIGHT PLZ
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=585659238

it's not quite the lottery, more like a really stacked game of poker. You can hedge your bets by making something good... it's not all random...
Besides, I don't need Undertale level of success. That's a really high bar.
>>
>>321799391

>>
Man I hate these threads
Always gives me guilt
Im just fucking tired of my project, I hate my colleagues plebeian opinions on what we should and should not do, they ruined the vision I had for the game, which was my idea in the first place, and I just dont have the drive to continue working on it
I mean, I DO want to finish it, Im tired of not getting anything actually done, but I cant muster the strength to do it.
>>
>>321800559
It's not really the same as playing the lottery though, is it? The lottery is random, no matter what numbers you choose. You can't "get good" at the lottery.

By contrast with gamedev, you can maximise chances. Having the right contacts, being involved in the gaming community (the actual community, not this cesspit), investing in the right avenues and of course, making a game that's not shit (or selling out to a meme: see I Am Bread, and so on), you can increase your odds of a successful game from 1 in 5000 to 1 in 50.

Made up numbers obviously, but it illustrates the point.

>>
>>321802445
I'm working on a bunch of minor things until I have to get to the combat, which isn't far from now. I can't really imagine how to do the combat without knowing how to have at least some kind of basic sense of drawing. Going to have to learn how to draw soon I suppose. I still don't know what I am going to do about the music though. I have no budget.

Sorry for the blog but gamedev is my creative outlet. It gives me something to really devote all I've got into. I love making games more than playing them, honest to god.

I've been out of funk lately and not working on my game due to depression and shit. I become a much stranger, less-healthy individual without my work and my art.

But it wont last long though. I live to make vidya, so I'll be back.

Yeah just a bottle. But it'll be two versions: an empty version and one with static liquid in it, which means the liquid isn't meant to move. And also the cork part. It's mostly cause I rather pay someone who is use to this than do it myself. It's also meant to be a little less boxy, thus the specialty. I just don't have the time to do it myself.

I was thinking java or c# with open gl. I just want a good few demonstrations of using 3d models with static 2d backgrounds, create interactions etc.

Would be easy enough to flip screens to battle or menu or overworld.

I just want to learn how to nail the core concepts or get a good demonstration somewhere.

I dont know why but I find unreal awfully long winded and would love to make my own engine from code so I could truly call it my own.

The only thing 3d about rpgs is the models. Gameplay never revolves around 3d based gameplay. It's all visual. Just take what you learn from rpg maker, and apply it to 3d.
>>
>>321812727
I doubt you're going to find any useful information
If you're still working off tutorials you probably should be making more simple games
Not to say you shouldn't attempt a jrpg if you want to, just be prepared to figure it out on your own. If you want to create your own engine, learn how to use opengl first. Although there's nothing wrong with unity, pillars of eternity was a 2d backdrop with 3d characters game that just came out on it

If you already know an object oriented language before starting, you can cut out over half of the trouble and learning time involved in learning Unity.

From there, it's just learning some of the tips and tricks you can pull off with Unity's inbuilt components and classes. Honestly, I've found the hardest part of Unity is grappling with the unintuitive UI, menu's and the like. The actual technical components are a piece of cake.

I came up with it when I realized my shop menu was poorly laid out and didn't have room for everything I wanted [webm related] and looking at some other vidya GUIs extensively mostly Ys7/Oath/Origin.. I might just keep the basic design of the pause menu but make it look pretty later when I develop some form of artistic skill, and using it often to see what I could improve to make it more user friendly.

Is there a good tool to make some medium-difficulty shapes that can be output as plain coordinates for vertexes with relative ease/less time investment? Firstly, Hotline Miami didn't invent the top-down shooter. And the game you were quoting didn't even look much like Hotline Miami in pace

Secondly, have there even /been/ many Hotline Miami clones? Compared to other indie shills, like Megaman clones, "Roguelikes" (which has lost all meaning) and no-effort RPG's, top down shooting is actually pretty rare, in indie games and in bigger studio-made games.

But thirdly, I'm fairly sure you've just come in here to bait some budding devs. Why not work on a game of your own, bro?

I've seen your game on AGDG and I've been meaning to ask, Why don't you have it so you are able to see all the tiles next to the player as you move instead of just clicking the tile you want to see and then moving? I think it would add a lot more strategy and even help streamline the sight mechanic better than just using a movement point to see 1 tile in front.

if you use shit that's like game maker's 3d you can get sort of wonky, early 2000s-like gameplay... using only keyboard to move around and sticking into walls. no mipmapping for doom-like graphics, etc. worlds.com worlds have this sort of value to them. eyeball land 3d https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GSCvMMwg0Y sort of funny pizza land, obscure game making engines but game maker 3d is still the king.
artsy unity games always have the same boring feel to them (increpare's games) save for a few (crypt worlds, goblet grotto).
dialogue is a very important part in these games unless you're going for a mainly atmosphere feel

>>321822037
You could do it like that if you want, but make sure when implementing the reverting vision you are able to control more than 1 unit other wise you won't be able to know where enemies are because of the limited vision. Maybe you can have it so your game has higher difficulties and implement it then but otherwise just keep it so that all previously visible tiles stay visible. I think that would give it a more exploratory feeling and lets the player see the progress they made through out the area.

Unity does 2D better than 3D and it's dog shit for anything multiplayer, so I'm thinking of picking up my old game in UE4, an engine where I don't have to use broken 100$ networking packages.

Hi, I'm Unity! What's that? You want networking that isn't meant for phones or 4 person co-op? Server authority and prediction, what's that?? Here, have photon and easyanticheat just like every other hackfest unity game!

Well technically you "can" write your own, I somehow did that back then.

But I do agree with you that Unity seriously lacks essentials. Either they're broken as fuck or they just officially tell you fucking lol to check the Asset Store TM.
>>
>>321824673
I used Bolt before Photon took over and the author went MIA. It was nice. When it worked. But I still felt like an idiot for using this engine when I knew that even Unreal 1 had better networking.

sigh... if no talent hacks like the ones behind reign of kings and whatever unity games can do it with unity and photon, then surely I can do it with UE4 and minimalistic (read: shit on purpose) graphics.

I'm not a smart man and managed to have some networking working. Don't worry dude, you can do it.

Getting the networking isn't that hard honestly, thinking of a solid game logic around it is.
>>
>>321825924
oh don't worry, I got it working fine. Authoritative, predicted and everything. I got burned out on the entire thing though because every time I wanted to do something slightly creative I had to work around the shittiness of the engine. All I thought about on the last day of development was "I wish I chose unreal".

I think the final problem I ran in to was coding my player physics to work with terrain. Since my networking was predicted and authoritative, physics were not deterministic, and the built in character controller was trash, I had to code a character controller from scratch. Got it working very well. You would've never guessed the game was Unity because the player physics didn't have that Unity sloppiness to it. But terrain colliders were absolute trash and traces would sometimes go through them. I made a script to convert terrain to meshes. Too bad mesh colliders were expensive as all fuck.

I spent too much time fixing the engine when I could've been making gameplay. If you're making a simple singleplayer or 2D game, I'd say unity is an alright choice and only just.
>>
>>321817838
Who said anything about paying? I just want to make something silly & fun.
I'd give it away if there was a way to do that without it seeming like a scam; I plan to sell the game for like 3$ or something. People expect more of freeware than very low cost games.
>>
Anyone else like writing networking code? It's a pain but super satisfying when you get it right.
>>
>>321826874
>I spent too much time fixing the engine when I could've been making gameplay.
This is also my main complain with Unity. If it wasn't for the editor and some wheels I don't want to rewrite I'd probably have changed a long time ago.
